Within this setting, the newly formed Department of Manufacturing Engineering (MfgE) is part of the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Information Technology. In addition to educating students who will lead one of America's resurging and rapidly growing career fields, the MfgE department supports our ABET-accredited programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. At the graduate level, MfgE faculty participate in the delivery of the Master of Science in Applied Engineering degree with multiple concentrations, including Engineering Management. By 2020, it is anticipated that the manufacturing engineering department will grow to ten full-time faculty members, two support staff, and 245 undergraduate students.
Active research areas in the department include automation and computer integrated manufacturing, materials processing, and additive manufacturing. Delivery of the curriculum involves significant hands-on experience in which students learn practical, current, and applied skills valued by employers. Academic alliances with industry partners, collaborative programs, and co-op experiences provide students with experience using state-of-the-art equipment and software.
Position Description. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Chair of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering position requires administrative, some teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities along with a terminal degree. The position will provide vision and leadership for establishing and implementing the teaching, scholarship, and service missions of the new department. The Chair will advance a culture of academic excellence in which distinction in teaching, research, and service are expected and rewarded. He/she will provide leadership for undergraduate and graduate curriculum development, assessment of student learning, accreditation, research programs, and initiatives that further the department’s and the college’s strategic plans. The Chair will be instrumental in hiring the new faculty and support staff in the department and will be responsible for departmental resource management, such as budgeting, purchasing, and academic scheduling. He/she will represent the department within the university community as well as establish contacts and build relationships with industry, alumni, and external stakeholders. The Chair will support university and college-level fund raising activities, while providing leadership for those at the department level. He/she will also be a part of the leadership team of the college’s newly formed engineering and technology research center. The Chair will be an active teacher-scholar in the department and participate in appropriate service activities. The position is a 12-month tenured or tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
