Job Description:


The basic purpose of this position is to perform various manual tasks in general construction, maintenance and repair, which require some specialized skill and the use of hand and power tools. The Skilled Laborer position performs various manual labor tasks in support of the work of skilled tradesmen in a variety different of trades; dig and back-fill excavations and level earth to grade; install and repair signs; maintain the grounds and performs snow removal and ice control duties; performs routine building maintenance and repairs and performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Performs various manual labor tasks requiring some specialized skills to assist in the work of skilled tradesmen such as carpenters, plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians, etc.;
  • Troubleshoot minor maintenance problems and repair and/or replace components as necessary;
  • Maintain and repair buildings systems and make minor adjustments to equipment, settings and systems;
  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine repairs such as inspecting and replacing belts, replacing filters, unstopping toilets and sinks and fixing minor water leaks;
  • May reset electrical circuits and perform other work not requiring a license or other certification;
  • Repair doors and windows, hang pictures and bulletin boards and replace items such as floor and ceiling tiles;
  • Clean and lubricate door hardware assemblies and cut and/or duplicate keys;
  • Assisting in erecting and dismantling wall partitions and other building renovations;
  • Performs various manual tasks in connection with the installation, repair and maintenance of drainage, sewer and/or water pipelines or conduits such as positioning, joining and sealing pipe sections and culverts and erecting and removing shoring and bracing for trenches and excavations; opens clogged catch basins, sewer lines, etc.;
  • Digs trenches and similar excavations, refills excavations, spreads and levels soils, gravel and other materials using pick, shovel and rakes;
  • Patches broken or eroded pavement by breaking surface and mixing and applying a variety of paving materials such as mortar, concrete, cement, etc. using small hand and hand-held power tools to maintain roadways and sidewalks in a safe condition;
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains signs such as regulatory, way finding and information signs by performing such tasks as digging holes and installing supports using a variety of small hand and hand-held power tools;
  • Plants, transplants, prunes, trims and fertilizes trees, flowers and shrubs; seeds lawns and gardens; sprays for insects and plant diseases; and performs related tasks such as cutting grass, raking leaves and maintaining irrigation systems as required for the upkeep and beautification of college grounds;
  • Services and makes routine repairs and adjustments to automobiles, trucks and other motorized equipment including changing and repairing tires, replacing headlights and windshield wiper blades , testing batteries using battery tester and checking radiator water levels;
  • Installs attachments such as mowers, plow blades, leaf catcher buckets and vacuum cleaner to tractors and/or trucks to equip vehicles for grass cutting, roadway cleaning, snow removal, etc.;
  • Performs various manual tasks in connection with snow removal and ice control work including shoveling snow operating snow removal vehicles and equipment, spreading salt and sand and scraping/breaking ice in order to provide safe roadways and sidewalks for motorists and pedestrians;
  • Loads and unloads trucks; unpacks and stores supplies and equipment in stockrooms, storerooms or supply closets; and takes periodic inventories of supplies and equipment;
  • Performs duties such as moving furniture and equipment; sweeping and washing floors, collecting and removing rubbish and recycling;
  • Based on assignment, may operate motor vehicles including light vehicles and trucks and/or snow and ice control equipment in connection with assigned unit activities;
  • Uses Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to generate work requests and to record maintenance 



  • Skill in using small hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.;
  • Skill in using hand-held power tools such a drills, saws, etc.;
  • Skill in using a variety of motorized equipment such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, forklift, dollies, etc.;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to work in a team setting;
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects;
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time;
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds;
  • Manual dexterity;
  • Physical stamina and endurance;

  • Applicants must have at least six months of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in performing manual labor in connection with general construction or maintenance work;
  • Applicants must possess a current and valid Class 3 or higher Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

  • Knowledge of a wide variety of precision measuring equipment and devices commonly used in the building maintenance field;
  • Skill in using a wide variety of tools commonly used in the building maintenance field;
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations;
  • Ability to read and interpret such documents as plans, specifications, blueprints, etc.;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records;

  • Class 2 hoisting operator's license;
  • MA pesticide applicators license;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer;
  • Experience installing and maintaining irrigation systems;
  • Experience working in a community college or equivalent environment.
