This position will include a tenured faculty appointment in an appropriate academic department or school. This position reports directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor and provides leadership for student recruiting, retention, and enrollment management, with direct responsibility for the following: Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, Records and Registration, and Bursar.
Founded in 1869, Southern Illinois Normal first opened its doors in 1874 as a college for teachers. In 1947, the name was changed to Southern Illinois University, reflecting the expanding academic mission of the institution. Today, SIU Carbondale has an enrollment of 18,000 students and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Comprehensive Research University (high research activity). Responsibilities include: assisting and advising the provost in the oversight and management of all student recruitment, retention, and enrollment management matters; managing and accomplishing the goals of a comprehensive enrollment management plan; directing the development and flow of communications between the reporting units; attending to the needs of many individuals, including student applicants, current students and their families; and monitoring the operations of all reporting units. A particular emphasis is on working with the colleges to develop integrated university-wide recruitment and retention initiatives.
The position requires a doctorate or terminal degree with credentials for appointment as a tenured Associate Professor or Professor within the candidate’s academic discipline at the University, and three years of administrative experience at department / division chair / director position or higher within a university setting. Must be capable of working well with students, faculty, deans, and the administrative staffs of support services on campus, and must have demonstrated experience working on recruitment and/or retention issues. Five to seven years of administrative experience at chair / director position or higher within a university setting are preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to represent SIU Carbondale to its internal and external audiences are also preferred. Applicants should demonstrate achievements in personnel, budget planning and management, knowledge of marketing principles, and the ability to develop and implement a campus-wide strategy for recruitment of new students and retention of enrolled students.
