Teaches classes and assesses performance in the Emergency Services discipline. Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study that includes measurable objectives as well as prepares instructional materials as necessary. Assists counselors, department’s chairperson, staff and faculty in maintaining an effective program. Attends required meetings and other events. Improves professionally and maintains required certification/licenses. Engages in scholarly activities, and/or creative endeavors which contributes to the academic mission of the Department. Engages in services activities at the department, college, university or community levels.
Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters degree in one of the following disciplines: Emergency Management, Fire and Emergency Services, or Homeland Security required. Substantial practical, related work experience totaling at least five (5) years with a public safety or emergency service organization and at least four (4) years experience teaching public safety or emergency services at the college level required.
Graduation from an accredited institution with an earned doctorate degree in one of the following disciplines: Education, Public Administration/Public Policy, Leadership/Management, Political Science, Health Education/Promotion, or other closely related discipline as approved by the RTP committee, and practical, related work experience preferred.
Knowledge of professional organizations and standards, including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Utah State Emergency Medical Services, and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Knowledge of emergency services leadership and management issues.
Knowledge and application of instructional methodologies.
Knowledge of current Emergency Services topics.
The tenure track faculty hired into this position will have extensive emergency care/medicine experience, emergency management/leadership experience, and be academically qualified.
Excellent teaching skills.
Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Skilled in instructing students effectively, grading students fairly based on their demonstrated competence and maintaining order in the classroom.
Skilled in use of online learning tools and mechanisms.
Skilled in developing courses in the area of their expertise.
Skilled in writing and securing grants and/or additional funding mechanisms for the department.
Skilled in researching, writing, presenting, and publishing scholarly activities.
Skilled in operating appropriate Emergency Services equipment.
Ability to develop test instruments.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
Ability to develop, coordinate, manage and foster teamwork among diverse education and training programs.
