Job Description:

Success Coach/Career Advisor (Academic Counselor)-Advising & Life Map

We are seeking an Academic/Career Advisor to assist the College in providing a success coaching model for new students to include recent Boston Public High School graduates enrolling at Bunker Hill Community College, students who are experiencing academic challenges, and continuing students.  The model includes a collaborative network of support systems to identify student needs, address student challenges and provide appropriate services and referral, in an effort to enhance student success and retention.

Specific Duties:

  • Utilizing a success coaching model based on best practices, provide an array of traditional student support services including enrollment, financial aid, academic career/vocational and transfer advising.
  • Administer and interpret academic, personal and career/vocational assessments, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of new students in regard to their entry-level basic skills and motivation.
  • Assist students in developing short term and long term academic, career and life plans; review alignments of career and educational goals with student interests, skills and personal financial requirements.
  • Assist students in creating a personalized educational plan utilizing electronic resources and with matching the student with a Learning Community relevant to prior experience, skill set and future goals.
  • Assist with the advisement and registration of all new and continuing students regarding their academic plan, course selection/sequencing, curriculum/concentration selection and changes, career exploration and transition issues.
  • Participate in the implementation of the College's Life Map initiative, a comprehensive philosophy of engaging students in the creation and continued assessment of an academic, career and life plan. Collaborate with faculty and staff to implement career and academic advising across the curriculum; assisting with the design and/or facilitation of career and advising related classroom presentations.
  • Serve as a resource for Learning Community Seminar instructors, faculty advisors and faculty participating in our departmental advising model; assist and or facilitate group advising, educational planning and career exploration activities.
  • Collaborate with the Student Activities Office and Peer Mentors on our comprehensive new student advising and orientation process; developing and facilitating advising related orientation sessions and coordinating the registration process for new students.
  • Collaborate with Boston Public High Schools and Community Based Organizations to provide a smooth transition and ongoing support for recent BPS graduates attending the College.
  • Assist in the hiring, training and supervision of graduate interns, peer advisors and work study students.
  • Provide assistance and support for special student programming related to student retention; monitor and provide support to students who are on academic probation.


  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or a closely related field; with three (3) years' experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience working with students in a student services/client services or equivalent setting.
  • Proficiency in student information systems and technology as well as MS Word and Excel.
  • Excellent, demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.
  • Ability to work 2 evenings per week (11am-7pm) and some Saturdays during registration periods required.

Additional Information

Salary Range: $50,785.00-$62,212.00. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement.
