Duties & Responsibilities
The position reports to the Executive Director and Director. The Research Reporter/editor participates in the editorial, strategic work of Journalist's Resource, a dynamic website run by the Shorenstein Center. The website bridges the gap between academic knowledge and the mass media on a wide range of public policy subjects, and has a broad audience comprised of journalists, journalism professors, and the public. The website is a repository of thousands of papers and the content is distributed on an hourly, daily and weekly basis via Twitter, Facebook and a weekly email. Visits to the website this year will exceed 2 million pageviews.
The Research Reporter/editor works on Journalist's Resource.org, writing about academic papers on public policy. The job requires the skills of a daily news reporter & scholarly researcher. In addition, the work involves hands-on website work, vigorous engagement in social media, and outreach to working journalists and scholars.
Read, understand and summarize academic papers covering the full range of public policy subjects. Must keep up with the daily news and be familiar with social science research methods. Blending academic knowledge with news is the crux of the job. Respond to breaking news with academic work helpful to reporters on deadline.
Evaluate, organize and select the topics that will be covered in a given week. Establish a system of alerts and patterns of information-seeking that allow the project to "keep up" with the newest, latest and most important research in the social sciences and incorporate that with trending news topics.
Must have a deep understanding of how social media works.
Work with other Journalist's Resource staff member and collaborate on:
Hiring student researchers and overseeing their workflow;
train them and make sure their work conforms to Journalist's Resource style and form;
oversee one external web consultant who provides feedback on back-end coding, trouble-shooting and new design initiatives.
Manage the development of new syllabi and other materials that will be posted on the website.
This position is a benefits-eligible term appointment, ending two years from date of hire with the possibility of renewal.

Bachelor's degree required along with five years related experience in journalism, Internet communications, Web development, publications or related fields. Experience with WordPress.
Superior research, writing, analytical skills. Proven project management skills, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure. Strong copy-editing, excellent organizational abilities and extremely detail-oriented. Master's degree a plus. Must be proactive and able to complete complex tasks with minimal direction on short deadline. Enthusiasm for new and emerging technologies. Familiarity with HTML, WordPress, PhotoShop, Word, Excel are desirable. Must be resourceful and creative about technical problem-solving. Experience in narrative journalism, multimedia reporting desirable. Experience with website management, from the technical/server side to user experience, desirable. Strong professional, interpersonal skills.
