Detailed Job Description
The Research Engineer uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Will evaluate, select, and apply standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. May be involved in various research projects to include conducting experiments, writing research proposals, writing technical papers and research reports.

The position of laboratory manager will be focused on the biological engineering side of the department, which has seen significant growth over the past several years.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree relevant field of study and at least four years of related experience or an approved combination of education and experience in which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been attained. Knowledge in standard software applications. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Organization and detailed oriented. Approved Equivalencies: (1) Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study and at least four years of related experience; OR (2) Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field of study and at least five years of related experience; OR (3) Master's degree in a relevant field of study and at least two years of related experience; OR (4) All But a Dissertation; OR (5) Doctoral Degree.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:
A B.S. degree in chemical engineering or a related field is required, with strong preference given to candidates with either a M.S. or Ph.D. in the field and/or industrial experience, particularly in an R&D setting.Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier. Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge:
The candidate must have strong communication and be skillful with common laboratory tools and software. Experience with data collection software, UV/Vis, gas chromatography, chemical reactor and distillations systems, as well as biological instrumentation including centrifugation, flow cytometry, and bioreactors, is desirable. Experience with lab instrument piping and tube fitting is also desired. A working knowledge of basic chemical processes is required for selection of components needed for the design and outfitting of laboratory experiments.
M.S. or Ph.D. in chemical engineering; comfortable with mechanical tools, chemicals and biologicals, and knowledgeable about laboratory safety and chemical hygiene; knowledge of modern computer software programs related to office work and chemical engineering, and ability to learn software associated with research and teaching laboratory instrumentation. 59 Monthly (exempt): - Minimum - $ 42993.60 Midpoint - $ 62337.60
