The Vice President of Strategic Communications will lead a broad functioning communications division linking various units across the university and coordinating the communication vision and implementation plan for the university.

Additional Department Summary:

This position oversees strategic communications, outreach, and marketing and branding for the university's operation. He/she will work closely with the President and his leadership team, the media, state and industry leaders, donors and friends of the University, and entities across the state in order to effectively disseminate and promote the university's agenda in the state and the nation. This position has a primary objective to insure that The University of Alabama's mission for education, research, service, and economic development are furthered, promoted, and recognized. The Vice President's role will include responsibility for coordination of university-wide communications, research program messaging, marketing, and branding activities. The position has important liaison responsibilities for all centers/institutes, colleges, schools, recruiting, and other service units within UA. More specific duties include overseeing the PR function, internal communications, strategic communications (including the effective use of social media), media relations, marketing and branding. The Vice President will serve on The University of Alabama leadership team, reporting directly to the President.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Business or related field and a minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in higher education, business and/or industry, or not-for-profit communications or marketing; OR Master's degree in a related field and a minimum of thirteen (13) years of experience as stated above; OR Doctoral degree in a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as stated above.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:

The Vice President will have demonstrated experience consulting and advising senior-level executives. He/she should be familiar with and able to implement the strategic use of new media to complement and enhance traditional channels of communications. In keeping with the executive nature of the position, experience managing a group of professionals, and knowledge and skill administering budgets and department finances is required.

It is critical that the incumbent exhibit the important qualities of emotional maturity, self-confidence, common sense, judgment, fairness, creativity, discretion, decisiveness based when possible on fact and data, the ability to work with cross-functional teams, political knowledge and savvy, diplomacy, tact, courage of convictions, commitment to education and to the community it serves, and a high tolerance for ambiguity. Other important skills include; Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities. Commitment to public higher education. Exceptional skills in communications, marketing, and interpersonal relations. Demonstrated experience working with media executives, policy makers, opinion leaders on behalf of UA. Demonstrated experience with effective research-based communications strategies. Strong management skills. Ability and willingness to delegate effectively and to hold direct reports accountable. Skilled decision-maker, with transparency in decision-making and management. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills; exceptional listening skills. Expertise in making presentations and negotiating with the media. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the use of education for social advancement.

Pay Grade/Pay Range:
