Detailed Job Description

RISD seeks a Digital Fabrication Technician to join the Division of Experimental & Foundation Studies, which provides the first-year studio curriculum for all undergraduate students. The Digital Fabrication Technician works in a dynamic environment where contemporary and emerging technologies meet longstanding traditions. The technician oversees complex machinery and other equipment such as CNC Machines (laser cutters, 3D printers, Milling Machines) large power tools and computer workstations. With an understanding of divisional practices, they provide recommendations on digital fabrication and computing policies/procedures; they implement and educate on these, as approved, for smooth and efficient division operations involving technology. The Digital Fabrication Technician advises and instructs students and faculty on the use of available technologies and equipment, including how these can be used to support the design process. The technician researches and evaluates new and alternative hardware and software availability, specifications, and prices, and makes recommendations based on their findings. They supervise, train, and coordinate schedules for student monitors of the facilities.  


Bachelor's degree in appropriate technical discipline.

Expertise with digital fabrication equipment and principles (Laser Cutters, Milling Machines, 3D printers, etc.) as demonstrated by overseeing, preparing, installing and operating digital fabrication equipment in an educational or industrial setting.

Experience with audio-visual and design software (such as Adobe suite, Rhino, Audacity, Final Cut Pro, Maya, Autodesk) with the ability to instruct, install, troubleshoot and resolve technological issues.

Prior in-depth experience with programming environments for the arts (Arduino, Processing, Max, OpenSCAD, etc.) with the ability to instruct, troubleshoot and resolve technological issues.

Demonstrated ability to develop in-depth understanding of the concepts, limitations, performances, directions, features, functionality, specifications and limitations of the software, hardware and peripherals selected by the department. Ability to stay current on new software as needed.

The ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Prior experience leading, guiding or supervising others.

Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural and inclusive setting.

Excellent interpersonal, presentation, oral and written communication skills.

Previous experience with providing support to visual artists/designers.

Experience with supporting various computer hardware and operating systems (Mac, Windows, Linux).

Knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety policies.
