The Tufts’ University Chaplain has profound impact on students, faculty and others and encourages Tufts’ tradition of progressive thought in education.
The University Chaplain assists the University in its educational mission by promoting the spiritual and moral development of its members. The University Chaplain is the umbrella for religious life on all three campuses, representing no constituency but advocating for all. The office sponsors interfaith services and programs, and creates an environment welcoming to persons of all faith or spiritual traditions. The office oversees the scheduling and upkeep of Goddard Chapel and the Inter-Faith Center and supervises staff and students affiliated with the Chaplaincy. The University Chaplain plans and implements reflective- and spiritual-based programs, and collaborates with others across the university to promote understanding/awareness/tolerance around religious traditions and issues. S/he demonstrates leadership in articulating a vision and possesses“deft management” along with being a team builder. S/he supervises associate chaplains and office staff, and is responsible for managing the chaplaincy’s budget. S/he conducts services for the University, primarily during various rites of passage, and is responsible for the integration of the Chaplaincy with other university programs and other aspects of campus life. The University Chaplain offers confidential counseling to any student, faculty or staff member who seeks support, regardless of religious background. S/he is the University’s liaison to area churches, other religious institutions and community organizations.
The University Chaplain must possess a Masters of Divinity or its equivalent and a minimum of five years of experience in a leadership position, which includes program development, budget management and supervisory experience. S/he must have a demonstrable commitment to active citizenship and to dialogue across many faith and spiritual traditions. Also required: experience in pastoral counseling, preferably in a university environment; university administrative experience; demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population and numerous constituencies; strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Must possess the ability to communicate across constituencies; strong facilitation and excellent listening skills are also required. Must be able to think creatively and strategically about communications strategies and media in an academic environment. Should be adept in using Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and Excel.
