This professional staff member is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal regulations and university guidelines of federal, private and university loans that are processed; serves as a resource and a liaison to Miami’s 1 Stop for Student Success Services. In addition this person will create and analyze reports. This position will also be responsible for answering general financial aid questions using knowledge of federal financial aid and university policies.
Ability to understand and perform basic coding in SQL language and create reports in MS Access or other ad-hoc query tools against an Oracle database. These skills will be used to create system rules and reports that will ensure compliance and accuracy with federal regulations.
Ability to analyze reports and make data driven decisions.
Provide clear and accurate loan indebtedness counseling to student and parent borrowers.
Generate biweekly reports to identify students who require exit counseling. Responsible for the coordination, generation and mailing of all exit counseling materials. Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal exit counseling regulations.
Ensures federal regulatory administering of federal and private student and parent loan applications.
Perform weekly and monthly audits of the Direct Loan program at Miami University. Ability to use these audit reports to make independent judgment decisions confirming compliance with Title IV regulations.
Monitors progress of student financial aid applications and uses independent judgement to resolve issues where possible.
Retrieves information from centralized computer system in order to correctly process applications.
Maintains working knowledge of university and departmental policies and procedures and of legislation relevant to student financial aid application processing/qualifications.
Answers questions from students and/or parents regarding application processing and solves related problems as appropriate, specific to loans.
Work tactfully and effectively to resolve escalated caseloads from the 1 Stop for Student Success Services center to research and solve problems for individual applicants and students in a timely manner, prioritizing tasks to minimize the possibility of negative impact on student recruitment and retention.
Provides general clerical support by answering phones, assisting walk-in traffic, typing correspondence, answering or referring questions, etc.
Liaison to Student Financial Assistance staff, other university departments, the U.S. Department of Education and private lenders regarding student loan status.
Provides support functions to other areas within the Office of Student Financial Assistance as necessary.
Effective communicator who has demonstrated the ability to speak publicly to large groups.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience with two years’ experience in a financial aid or equivalent office. Requires strong communication skills, excellent interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, proven customer service skills, excellent data entry, effective presentation skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with others. Attention to detail, accuracy and problem solving skills are very important. Also required is a basic understanding of SQL programming language.
Experience with Microsoft Access, other ad-hoc query tools and Ellucian Banner is desired.
