This position is responsible for utilizing web platform tools and services to provide new sections, features and capabilities to the award-wining risdmuseum.org as well as developing and maintaining tools for managing and publishing content and creating interactive experiences for both desktop and mobile.

The Web Developer is responsible for developing and maintaining a sustainable, extendable, well-documented website infrastructure. The role investigates, evaluates, recommends and implements new technologies, especially as they pertain to front-end development. They insure that the website adheres to industry standards for front-end development and documents all structure and new development. This role evaluates the current website structure and offers ideas for improvements and future development as well as provide support and tracking for bug fixes, maintenance tasks, and enhancements to risdmuseum.org. The Web Developer will be required to participate in on-call duty including off-hour emergency web support as necessary. This role will also contribute to enhancement and upgrade projects, provide Google Analytics tagging support, and perform a variety of other technical tasks needed to maintain a stable, well-documented, and responsive website.

This position reports to the Deputy Director of Exhibitions, Education, and Programs, and works in close coordination with the Digital Content Producer and the Registrar for Documentation and Digital Resources. The Web Developer must work well as a member of a team communicating with content developers from Education, Curatorial, Marketing and Development as well as with in-house IT and outsourced vendors as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 3 years experience in web development required.

Knowledge of the development lifecycle, including requirements collection, design, implementation and maintenance preferred.

Knowledge of current web technologies and trends in programming/development.

Experience working with web programming languages, web production tools, and content management systems, and relational database management systems. SQL and PHP are preferred.

Ability to craft creative technical solutions with minimal resources while building user-friendly solutions within the context of departmental initiatives and user goals required.

Experience with multiple platforms (Windows, Apple OS, Linux) in both server and client implementations.

Demonstrated experience in project management, including: assessment, estimating, scheduling, approvals, deliverables, and quality controls with a successful track record of driving strategic initiatives from inception through completion.

Demonstrated ability to manage web development contractors and maintain budget.

Excellent communication skills and experience facilitating groups and developing consensus.

Ability to prioritize, manage time well, work independently and cooperatively.

Understanding of museum practice and a knowledge of museum technology environments preferred.

Knowledge of current concepts on usability, accessibility and familiarity with intellectual property rights preferred.

Risdmuseum.org is built using Directus and uses phpMyAdmin to handle the administration of MySQL. The site is hosted on a third party service. The RISD Museum's collection management system is MuseumPlus.
