The RISD Career Center is seeking a Career Advisor to join their highly collaborative team. Known for their exceptional resources, dynamic programming, signature events and innovative strategies, the Career Center is deeply committed to the career success of RISD's students and alumni. The Career Center thrives on partnering with RISD's faculty, administration and student groups and consistently explores new ways to connect their resources and services throughout the RISD community. Recognized as a critical resource, the Career Center recently relocated to a wonderful new facility including a presentation space for career programming, interview rooms for recruiting visits and a conference room.

The Career Advisor will provide individual career counseling to students and alumni as they apply their knowledge of art and design in the pursuit of fulfilling careers. Emphasis is placed on acquiring skills and abilities and encouraging career exploration, goal setting and decision making. The Career Advisor will teach strategies, tools and techniques through career workshops, customized discipline-specific presentations and small group advising meetings.

Sensitivity and understanding of the unique needs of diverse students is essential; and the Career Advisor will provide steps and processes to help navigate opportunities in creative fields including those lacking diverse representation.

Recognizing the high value of internships for RISD students to gain exposure to the professional world, the Career Advisor will also contribute to research and database development of companies and organizations for potential internships, jobs and career opportunities.

Additionally, the Career Advisor will support the logistical needs and coverage of the Career Center's annual large-scale signature events and recruiting activities.

The ideal candidate will also employ an understanding and capability with social media tools: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and blogs to promote and educate students, alumni and the RISD community about Career Center resources and services.  


Bachelor degree or equivalent education and experience required.

Master's degree in counseling, higher education/college personnel or related area preferred.

One to three years' experience in college advising center, career center, or student success center, preferably in an art & design school.

Knowledge of advising techniques and theory and demonstrated understanding of current trends in career development and higher education: including an understanding of career assessment, job seeking skills, drafting cover letters and resumes, and interviewing techniques.

Provide information about jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities.

Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with students diverse in ability, background and academic interests and assess their needs.

Ability to interact with faculty, staff, students and employment community and work independently and with a team of colleagues.

Work in the office on all projects, initiatives and programs; work with staff members and the college community in a collaborative manner.

Participate in divisional and college committees as required.

Participate in after-hour, evening and weekend programs as required.
