Detailed Job Description

The Public Safety Lieutenant, Support Services works very closely with a variety of campus offices, such as the Dean of Students Affairs, the Office of Residence Life, and Facilities + EHS and assists the Director/Chief in administering safety and security operations including emergency management and instigations in an effective and sensitive manner. The incumbent is responsible for conducting investigations and follow-up on all incident reports received by the Department of Public Safety. Must have a strong working knowledge of and sensitivity to Title IX incidents and serve as the point of contact for these investigations. Assist in the management of Jeanne Clery compliance program for the College. Develop and implement all relevant safety educational programs for students, faculty and staff. Hire, train, develop, evaluate and supervise public safety support service staff, including facility monitors, dispatchers, and ARMS coordinator (s).  


Associates degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Three to five year's public safety experience in crime prevention, security or related fields, preferable in a higher education environment.

Current working knowledge of Title IX and the Jeanne Clery Act requirements and other laws, regulations, standards, guidelines and best practices pertinent to campus safety and security.

Strong investigative background, particularly involving sexual misconduct and relationship violence.

Evidence of commitment, solution-oriented thinking and strong organizational skills. Superior interpersonal and leadership skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information clearly.

Ability to maintain confidential information, exercise sound judgement, use discretion and handle multiple priorities.

Ability to relate to all members of the College community and have a strong commitment to diversity.

Requires successful completion of RI College & University Public Safety Training Academy or an accredited Municipal Police Training Academy within one year of hire, or as approved by Director.

The incumbent is required to become a State of RI licensed EMT within two years of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Completion of department mandatory training for PR-24, Handcuffs, and OC Spray handling required.

Required to maintain EMT, CPR and Emergency First Aid certifications.

Valid driver's license required.
