The database administrator is responsible for, at a senior level, the overall monitoring, management and maintenance of information databases used to operate the infrastructure and technology platform. The administrator will partner with internal and external technical groups to ensure that database performance is not hindered and performance standards adhere to service level agreements set with the enterprise.
Lead, design, create, deploy and manage database environments (stand alone or clustered), including any associated software needed to administer and secure and maintain those environments.
Develops, manages, implements and participates in the delivery of performance monitoring and capacity planning services for application databases either through homegrown or third party tools.
Evaluates and implements new releases of DBMS and other related software, determines the impact on standards and operations, and helps develops a migration strategy.
Provides direction and advice on the effective and efficient use of the DBMS as a technical specialist member of, or consultant to, project teams.
Participates in the development of departmental, centralized, or node-specific policies, standards, guidelines and recommended practices for configuration, installation, optimization and use of the DBMSs and database administration tools.
Writes program codes to schedule jobs, create and alter database structures, monitor and reorganize databases, and upgrade DBMSs and software products.
Generates technical proposals and recommendations for the purchase of hardware and software upgrades. Writes and produces Requests For Proposals (RFP) and Statements Of Work (SOW) for the acquisition of goods and services for the unit and for clients.
Tier 2 and 3 level infrastructure and application support for various databases and services. (Service Request, Change Request, Change to Test) (Experience with Apache, Tomcat, Weblogic, OBIEE a plus)
Makes recommendations to management regarding the purchase of software components used in database maintenance and upgrades to integrate with other software products to take advantage of current technology developments and software enhancements.
Experience with MySQL and PostgresSQL a plus.
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.
May opt to teach an approved one credit bearing course per semester on an as needed basis and with division approval.
Bachelor’s degree in Systems Analysis, Computer Science or related field
Minimum 6 years experience required in the installation, upgrades, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting and security for DBMS.
Minimum 6 years experience in evaluating, customizing and diagnosing DBMS software in a complex and heterogeneous environment
Minimum 6 years experience in architectural design of DBMS and associate subsystems including scripting, operating systems, storage, backups, services, monitoring and alerting
Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above may be substituted.
Able to function in a full administration role for an enterprise environment providing DBMS services. (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server strongly recommended)
Able to function in a full administration role for enterprise environment supporting an ERP system. (Experience with Ellucian Banner strongly recommended)
Able to function in a full administration role for enterprise backup, monitoring and recovery of DBMS systems (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server strongly recommended)
Able to function in a full administration role for enterprise cluster or RAC environment for DBMS systems (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server strongly recommended)
Supervisor training either through a University or training institute.
Preferred Industry Certifications: Oracle Database Administrator OCP/OCM / Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)
General understanding of networking and command line skills on cross platform systems. (Windows / Unix).
