The Resident Director is a live-in master's degree-level professional who is responsible for the operation of one residence hall, housing between 140 and 450 students. The Resident Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of residential students by providing services and programs focused on the Office of Residence Life’s Residential Curriculum. This position reports to an Assistant Director of Residence Life. Depending on the size of the residence hall, some Resident Directors supervise a graduate student who serves as an Assistant Resident Director.


  • Supervise, train, and evaluate 6-12 resident assistants and possibly 1 graduate assistant
  • Oversee implementation of strategies that enable student achievement of the goals of the Residential Curriculum:  academic success, effective community engagement, interpersonal development, and cultural competency
  • Respond to residents in need, referring to other professionals, when appropriate
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff stakeholders to implement programmatic opportunities connected with living learning community themes
  • Meet individually with select students to provide personal, social, academic, and occupational support that enhances student persistence
  • Utilize institutional data to assess and respond to student needs
  • Refer misconduct incidents and other policy violations to appropriate University office(s)
  • Serve as the financial, programmatic, and leadership adviser to the Community Leadership Team
  • Report, track, and follow up on maintenance issues with appropriate building managers, housekeeping staff, and physical plant employees
  • Supervise and coordinate student check-in, check-out, and room changes; assisting with the damage billing process
  • Assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty
  • Participate in departmental and divisional professional development activities, including committees
  • Teach Educational Leadership 301: Student Development in the Residence Halls [RA Class], as needed
  • Teach First Year Experience Course [UNV 101], as needed
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity education by promoting and attending campus & community multicultural events
  • Demonstrate cultural competence in race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, national origin and other areas of diversity
  • Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors
  • Implement Miami University and Office of Residence Life objectives, policies, rules, and procedures
  • Perform all administrative duties required to fulfill the RD responsibilities
  • Fulfill other general duties assigned by the Office of Residence Life, Division of Student Affairs and/or Miami University

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a master’s degree in education, college student personnel, counseling or human development, or a related field, conferred by beginning of contract, as well as the proven ability to effectively work with diverse populations and supervise staff. The Resident Director must be able to work independently, demonstrate initiative, display strong commitment to student learning, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside of the University. Individuals in this position must have the ability and willingness to assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty and respond to crisis and emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-baccalaureate experience in residence life, counseling, teaching, and living/learning environments is desired. Strong administrative and counseling skills are utilized in this position.
