Department Overview:

The Armstrong Student Center opened in January 2014. The Armstrong Student Center is a two phase project. The completed first phase provides a 150,000 square foot facility with seven dining options, event and meeting rooms, and a Center for Student Engagement and Leadership. East wing construction will begin in early 2016, providing additional meeting spaces, a new home for the office of Career Services, new dining concepts, and retail space. The Armstrong Student Center provides a wide range of programs and services that support students' satisfaction and success. During the academic year, the building serves the university community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

General Duties:

The Associate Director is responsible for managing all facility needs including coordinating with custodial services, supervising student staff, submitting repair requests, and monitoring building upgrade schedules.  They provide support for various technologies used throughout the building, student organization office space areas, and oversee all production for events occurring in the facility.

Duties

The Associate Director's primary responsibilities are:

  • Manage the daily operations of the Armstrong Student Center
  • Directly supervise the Assistant Director of Event Production and a diverse staff of student Building Managers who provide 24 hour building coverage
  • Work with the Director to manage facility and student employment budgets
  • Coordinate high quality customer service to patrons utilizing the facilities, services, and events
  • Work closely with both Assistant Directors to deliver a seamless and positive experience for event customers and participants
  • Management of high end technology, including but not limited to staging, sound, video, computers, digital displays, lighting and other presentation support equipment, services, and materials as requested by customers
  • Responsible for care, maintenance & replacement of technology equipment
  • Provide leadership and personal development opportunities for student staff
  • Coordinate custodial services with Housing, Dining, Recreation and Business Services staff to ensure high quality customer experiences throughout the building
  • Manage space utilized by student organizations; recognize diverse cultural differences, facilitate and support a collaborative environment 
  • Act as a liaison to building occupants, Dining Services, Miami University Police Department and Physical Facilities in all facility, maintenance and safety needs
  • Train staff on emergency procedures and execute procedures when necessary, serve as "Essential Personnel" in weather and other emergencies
  • Work on a team and with students in a collaborative environment
  • Project management and other duties and as required  

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in student development, higher/adult education, student personnel, business or closely related field and at least three years of closely related professional experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating learning environments and leading student staff teams
  • Demonstrated experience with facility management, event implementation, and technology
  • Demonstrated experience providing outstanding customer service
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Must be willing and able to work nights and weekends as needed to support events, activities and building supervision
  • Must be willing to participate in rotating on-call schedule
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs and appropriate technologies for union/building operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Seven years of closely related professional experience in a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated substantive operational, technology and personnel management skills
  • Experience in facility maintenance management, opening a new facility and retail operations 
  • Ability to exercise independent and professional judgment in matters of significance
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
