Miami University seeks an Associate Director for the American Culture and English (ACE) program, a dynamic and growing academic unit within the College of Arts and Science. The ACE undergraduate program provides intensive English language training to conditionally admitted students; we expect to serve approximately 300 students in Fall, 2015. The ACE graduate program provides similar training for conditionally admitted graduate students. The Associate Director reports to the Director of ACE. The anticipated date of appointment is July 1, 2015.
This position, a 1/2 time Associate Director for 11 months and a 1/2 time non-tenurable faculty for 9 months, will work with the Program Director regarding all aspects of the program, including: Determine staffing assignments for each term; schedule course offerings, including determining faculty teaching preferences and working with Global Initiatives and Registrar to build and schedule classes. Communicate with admitted ACE students to assure that they understand program requirements; advise ACE students; in conjunction with Global Initiatives, ISSS, and Registrar organize pre-semester orientation for new ACE students; coordinate advising and registration for ACE students; serve as a liaison with Graduate School for ACE-G student advising, orientation, and registration. In consultation with the Director and faculty: provide leadership reviewing and updating the curriculum as needed; coordinate curriculum design with coordinated programs (e.g., English/ESL Composition, Middletown ELC, UNV101, culture courses in other departments); chair ACE Curriculum Committee. Organize a pre-semester orientation workshop for ACE instructors, and follow-up meetings as needed; advise culture course faculty on the design of their courses; conduct a pre-semester meeting to coordinate curriculum across the culture courses; conduct regular teaching observations and provide teachers with formative and evaluative feedback. Assist with testing and placement of students into appropriate ACE curricula, and into appropriate courses upon completion of the program; collect data on ACE students’ progress once they matriculate (e.g., GPA, retention rate, graduation rate); provide leadership in conducting periodic assessment of student and program outcomes, as needed. Work with offices across campus on ACE-related issues and questions as they arise (e.g., Middletown ELC, Residence Life, Athletics, Admission); be available in ACE office a minimum of 20-25 hrs per week to handle questions.
Miami University appointment during the 2014-15 academic year; Master's or professional degree in TEFL/TESL or other relevant field; experience in English language program administration in a higher education setting; demonstrated ESL teaching skills; expertise in the areas of intercultural writing, multicultural and comparative rhetoric, world Englishes, or L2 writing; strong leadership and organizational skills; effective communication and customer service skills; demonstrated interpersonal skills, including working with international students, faculty, and staff; ability to foster multicultural perspectives.
Ph.D. in appropriate related field; significant international experience.
