Under the supervision of the Director of Excel Programs, the Excel Pre-Collegiate Counselor shares pre-collegiate, recruitment, enrollment, and retention responsibilities with other members of the department. The counselor’s primary responsibilities are to provide pre-college support, general admissions counseling, and educational planning advice to prospective students in select high school settings. The position is responsible for designing bilingual (English & Spanish) activities, presentations, workshops, and events for high school populations and their parents related to the college process, outreach, and recruitment efforts. The position performs its duties in select high schools, community outreach events, community/college fairs, as well as in office.
The objective of the Excel Pre-Collegiate Program is to help students reach their educational goals, in addition to supporting the enrollment goals of the institution by providing pre-collegiate activities to prospective students, parents and high school counselors in targeted high schools. In order to meet these objectives the position requires extensive communication with MSU Denver’s admissions, enrollment services, Excel at MSU Denver program, student services departments, administrative and teaching staff in the Excel Pre-Collegiate Program High Schools, and new and prospective students in high school. The position also works with AHEC conference planning, Colorado admissions recruiters, members of the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations, and Educational Opportunity Centers.
60% – Provide on-site admissions counseling and educational planning to prospective students. Activities include but are not limited to, academic planning, admissions application process, college essay and resume writing, financial aid and scholarship application processes, and goal setting. Prepares and delivers bilingual (English & Spanish) college preparation presentations, workshops, activities, and events in Excel Pre-Collegiate high schools to prospective students, parents and other interested groups. Assists with program coordination, with an emphasis on serving diverse, underrepresented students, including students of color; helps train and supervise Excel interns and ambassadors; utilizes data for program evaluation and planning. Assessment and evaluation of effectiveness of the program and the services provided. Plans and coordinates on-campus visitation events and tours for students from Excel Pre-Collegiate high schools. During the academic school year, the majority of the counselor’s time is spent at the assigned Excel Pre-Collegiate Program high schools. This position will travel to campus and assigned high schools as appropriate. Sometimes this travel occurs many times daily and therefore will require the use of a valid Driver’s License and use of personal vehicle.
20% Collaborate with Excel at MSU Denver Team to facilitate a smooth transition for students to the university. Participate in various departmental, campus and university initiatives related to retention and student success including outreach events.
15%- During the summer the counselor will be on campus and will assist with the development, implementation, and coordination of summer camp and activities. Provide support to Office of Admissions when needed and preparation for upcoming school year.
5% – Other duties as assigned
Two years experience working with high school aged youth.
Two years experience working with a diverse, underrepresented population, including students of color as well as traditional and non-traditional students.
Two or more years of experience using Microsoft Office Software to include (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Experience using Banner or related student information database system
Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
Bilingual (English/Spanish)-will be using Spanish on daily basis (both speaking and writing).
Bachelor’s degree in higher education, counseling, social work, or human services
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in pre-collegiate program planning, college recruiting, admissions, or related field.
Demonstrated successful experience in outreach and recruitment efforts of underrepresented students including but not limited to students of color.
Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, presentation and communication skills are preferred.
