Detailed Job Description
Provides specialized student services for international students. Responsible for immigration, academic, and personal advising, new student immigration programming and facilitation, promotion of social and cultural activities to students, and helping to create opportunities for student engagement within the college and the community. Works as part of a team to support international students and supervises international enrollment support staff.
Essential Job Functions
1. Provides students with necessary pre-arrival information, facilitates new student orientations, and coordinates new student orientation programming.
2. Assists students with course selection, registration, drop and add, graduation, transfer procedures, and scholarship information.
3. Advises international students in F-1 and J-1 status on immigration regulations. Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
4. Issues I-20s (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant F-1 Student Status) and DS-2019s (Certificate of Eligibility for J-1 Exchange Visitor Status) for students.
5. Processes and maintains student records in SEVIS, institutional databases, and student files.
6. Manages implementation, maintenance, and procedures for accurate and timely reporting to comply with immigration regulations and SEVIS reporting requirements.
7. Provides academic advising as it relates to educational programs, including managing students on academic probation. Serves as liaison between the students and faculty and assists students having academic difficulty in utilizing all available resources.
8. Advises students on personal concerns. Makes appropriate referrals and contacts, and assists students when emergencies arise.
9. Provides regular contact with students through email and other social networking media. Manages student appointments.
10. Promotes social and cultural events designed to integrate students into the college community and supports the college's internationalization efforts to provide intercultural opportunities for the college's domestic students. Helps to create opportunities for student engagement within the college and the community.
11. Liaises with various college departments and government agencies, including but not limited to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Department of State.
12. Trains internal DSO's and ARO's throughout the college and stays abreast of F-1/J-1 classification visa regulations.
13. Supervises staff involved in the international enrollment process.
14. Monitors, evaluates, and revises processes as needed to maintain a model of continuous process/program improvement.
15. Prepares periodic reports on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution [required]; master's degree preferred.
2. U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident [required] by Federal regulations.
3. Experience in providing academic F-1 [required] and J-1 [preferred] immigration advising to college or university students.
4. International experience that may include studying, living or working abroad, or interacting with international students.
5. Experience working in a college or university providing advising, orientation and programming for international students.
6. Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge Skills Abilities
1. Knowledge of SEVIS and F-1 visa student regulations as outlined in 8 C.F.R. § 2
2. Knowledge of the principles of student advising and student development theory.
3. Skill in the use of personal computers and general office software.
4. Ability to interpret J-1 visa student regulations as outlined in 22 C.F.R. § 62.23.
5. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
6. Ability to research related information and regulations, prepare reports and documents, and attend to details with a high level of accuracy.
7. Ability to effectively manage multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment.
8. Ability to think critically, set priorities, and make sound and prudent decisions.
9. Ability to supervise and direct the work of a support staff.
10. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure, amidst challenging interpersonal interactions.
11. Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
12. Ability to travel between campus and off site locations.
13. Ability to work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations.
