SUMMARY AND SCOPE OF POSITION:
The Associate Dean of Admission and Director of Admission Communication primary purpose is to help lead the strategic recruitment, selection, and yielding of highly talented and diverse students through the direct oversight and engagement with all marketing and communication initiatives and materials. The incumbent will also share in the load of reading and rating applications, traveling to assigned geographic regions and conducting information sessions for visiting families and groups (modified from the typical responsibilities given year-round engagement with marketing and communications). The incumbent will supervise at least two staff members and provide leadership to the entire Office of Admission as it relates to marketing and communications. The incumbent coordinates/works closely with: deans, counselors, all Admission staff, Bates alumni, secondary school counselors and key offices across campus, most especially the Bates Communication Office (BCO).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Lead all marketing and communication efforts for the Office of Admission, which includes:
Student outreach campaigns
Admitted students yield campaign
All print and electronic communication with prospective students from entry in inquiry pool through point of enrollment
Messaging for the Office of Admission (e.g. information sessions, talking points for the road)
Chief liaison with the Bates Communications Office (e.g. press inquiries, market research)
Management of the Communications and Outreach team within the Office of Admission (i.e. staff who work on specific communications initiatives)
Supervision of two staff members within the Office of Admission.
2. Manage assigned geographic territories (half the typical load), which includes:
a) 5-8 weeks of travel for off-campus recruitment visiting high schools and community based organizations, meeting with members of Bates Alumni in Admission, leading off-campus information sessions and/or regional sessions with other schools. Travel is primarily domestic, but may include international depending on the candidate strengths and existing staff within the Office of Admission.
b) review of 400-600 applications annually through all round of decision making, which includes the first read of an application file, recommendations on the appropriate decision to the Admission Committee and sitting as a member of the Admission Committee during candidate deliberation.
c) all related correspondence, which may include communications from prospective students, families, counselors, alumni, etc.
2. On occasion, lead information sessions for visitors and conduct interviews with prospective students.
3. Key senior leadership responsibilities within the Office of Admission, as assigned by the Dean and Director, and based upon on the strength of the identified candidate and current staffing within the Office of Admission. Examples may include leading weekly team meetings, planning staff retreats and representing Bates at national conferences related to the position’s purview.
The successful candidate must have high and positive energy, a strong commitment to diversity, and superb command of language for both extensive writing and public speaking. The ideal candidate should also enjoy spending time with prospective students and families, high school counselors and alumni on behalf of Bates. Traits we highly value in the Office of Admission, and at Bates, include curiosity, creativity, flexibility and a commitment to collaboration and the larger team. We require a BA/BS degree, recommend a master’s degree of any kind, and at least 5-7 years of previous experience in admissions or a related field for the Associate Dean position.
