Detailed Job Description

Job Description:

Operates boilers and related equipment. Reads meters and gauges at specified intervals. Opens and closes valves and adjusts controls. Checks/monitors operating systems to detect faulty operating equipment.  Cleans, maintains and/or lubricates power plant and related auxiliary equipment. Records data and maintains logs on such matters as temperatures, fuel and consumption. Performs related work as required such as, maintaining cleanliness of work area, verifying receipt of fuel, directing fuel deliverers to proper storage areas, attend training programs, and instruct students in the use of electronic equipment, safety measures. Checks and/or monitors air conditioning and/or ventilation systems in order to ensure safe and effective operations. Meets all other requirements in the Classification Specification for Occupational Group 48 revised 10/96. Other duties as assigned.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division Classification Specification for Steam Fireman I may be   obtained at the Human Resources Office or at:

  • Possession of a current and valid Second Class Steam Fireman's license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, pursuant to Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Law and possession of a current and valid driver's license. (PLEASE MAIL A COPY OF BOTH LICENSES TO HUMAN RESOURCES, 250 NEW RUTHERFORD AVENUE, BOSTON, MA 02129.)
  • Minimum of one year experience performing the duties and qualifications listed in the Classification Specification at
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods, techniques and procedures of operation of steam boilers, auxiliary equipment, and air conditioning and ventilation systems
  • Skills in using small hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, screw drivers, hacksaws, pipe threader, etc.
  • Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, etc. governing assigned unit activities
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, lift and carry heavy objects, to visually distinguish colors
  • All other requirements in the Classification Specification for Occupational Group 48 revised 10/96
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff and student population

Additional Information

Salary: $721.48/wk.   

Shift: Monday-Friday 2:00p.m.-10:00p.m. (2nd shift)
