Detailed Job Description

The Director of Sponsored Programs is responsible for the pursuit of government grants and oversight of sponsored programs in alignment with Bentley's mission and strategic plan. The Director will take a strategic approach to institutional efforts to obtain external funding through grants, contracts, and other sources.

Design, lead and oversee the execution of a university-wide sponsored grants program in keeping with the needs, competencies and strategic priorities of the institution, its faculty and staff. Tasks range from identifying grant sources and informing appropriate individuals; assisting with the development of program outlines, budgets and grant writing, final grant production, and monitoring the post-award process and reporting functions.

The Director ensures compliance with all federal administrative requirements and costing principles, state regulations, grantor restrictions, and university fiscal policies. The Director oversees all aspects of proposal administration, sponsored program agreements and contract negotiation with external agencies. The Director serves as the university's authorized signatory for applications and awards in this area.  

Additional Description of Duties:

Research and interpret funding opportunities and requests for proposals from government agencies to determine appropriateness for the university; disseminate information about funding opportunities to faculty and staff on a regular basis.

Work with faculty to prepare and submit proposals; work collaboratively with the finance office in the tracking and reporting of grant expenditures and ensure timely reporting to the awarding agency.

Work collaboratively with Deans, Provost's office and other faculty committees and councils to promote an environment conducive to identifying and securing outside funding for faculty research.  

Position Qualifications

Master's degree preferred and 5+ years of related experience in sponsored programs offices preferably in higher education. Must demonstrate strong organizational skills, orientation to detail, excellent oral and written communication, competence with detailed budget preparation, process management with interpersonal skills effective in discussing the project interests and research goals of independent, members of the faculty.

Must have understanding and ability to research and interpret extensive federal regulations; ability to represent faculty interests and the broader university beyond our campus; ability to maintain professional demeanor while interacting with individuals under stress; technical capability with spreadsheets and federal software; ability to multi-task and work under extreme time pressure; ability to work either alone or collaboratively; negotiation skills.  

License(s) Required for the Position

Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United States driver's license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley's insurance carrier.
