The assistant dean has primary responsibility for overseeing academic advising, registration and course scheduling, admission and recruitment, and graduation of undergraduate students in the College of Creative Arts.

Duties

  • Oversees the development and implementation of the divisional academic advising plan--including advising-related functions, policies, and procedures, in alignment with the University-wide plan and guidelines.  Key functions include overseeing the graduation certification for CCA students, petitions and exceptions, advisee assignments, advisor training, advising assessment, advising communications, and academic intervention processes.
  • Serves on advising- and recruitment-related university committees (e.g., Undergraduate Academic Advising Council, Inter-Divisional Committee of Advisors, Summer Orientation Committee)
  • Serves on the divisional Executive Committee and other assigned committees as per CCA Governance
  • Participates and oversees the division’s involvement in Summer Orientation
  • Oversees the divisional Arts Day event every fall
  • Coordinates recruitment and admission efforts for the division, including recruitment and yield events and communications, as well as work with student ambassadors
  • Responding to and tracking student concerns related to advising
  • Supervising  the part-time professional staff advisor within the division
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Three to five years of experience in direct delivery of academic advising to undergraduate students (can be while or after completing an advanced degree program)
  • Familiarity with best practices in academic advising, recruitment practices and student development
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate across departments and divisions
  • Evidence of the capacity to learn and work with university information and software systems

  • Knowledge of, or experience with, arts-based disciplines or practices
  • Flexibility and capacity for innovative thinking
  • Capacity to exhibit a high degree of attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to prioritize a large volume of on-going tasks and projects
  • Demonstrated capacity to enhance respect for diversity
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with other University departments, divisions, offices and programs
