The University of Alabama invites applications from, and nominations of, creative and dynamic candidates for the position of Dean of the University Libraries. As chief advocate for a library system with robust institutional support and proactive donor engagement, the Dean has overall responsibility for the collections, programs, and services of the libraries, as well as for planning and developing external sources of funding. Ultimately, the successful candidate will demonstrate a 21st-century vision for leadership in a thriving university library system.
The University of Alabama, founded in 1831 as Alabama’s first public college, is a beautiful residential campus dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Enrollment at the University reached a record high of 36,155 for fall 2014, including approximately 5,000 graduate students enrolled in 121 graduate and professional degree programs. The 2014 freshman class, at 6,856 students, was the largest and best qualified in UA history. Ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade, UA ranked 38th among public universities in 2015. The University of Alabama Libraries is a system of five discipline-related libraries, including the Hoole Special Collections Library, the McLure Education Library, the Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering, the Bruno Business Library, and the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library for the Humanities. Together, they provide access to over 4 million print and electronic resources, 467 full-text online resources, 150 academic software packages, e-Science data management, 3D printing, as well as access and support for student audio, video, and print production tools and resources.
The University of Alabama Libraries hosts and supports the Alabama Digital Humanities Center where faculty, staff, and advanced students can explore digital resources, consult with experts about project development and digital research, and collaborate on innovative research and teaching projects. The University Libraries system also houses the A. S. Williams III Americana Collection, which was acquired by the University of Alabama in 2010. This unique collection contains rare documents, photographs, books and maps related to Southern and American history.
The University Libraries system maintains membership in the Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, the Center for Research Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, LYRASIS, the Digital Library Federation, the Digital Preservation Network, and the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries. The University Libraries system is a regional depository for U.S. Government documents, and is one of 90 member libraries in the United States, and the only member in the state of Alabama, to partner with HathiTrust.
The successful candidate will effectively communicate a vision for leveraging emerging technologies, building cooperative campus partnerships that enhance programming opportunities, and promoting and enhancing digital scholarship and collections. Qualifications and characteristics include, but are not limited to:
• MLIS/MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program and/or Ph.D. degree in relevant field required;
• A record of professional accomplishment through research, publication, service, and leadership in areas that affect and inform libraries;
• Significant experience in a complex research library environment;
• A substantial record of research, publication, and/or professional contributions that would qualify the candidate for rank of full professor;
• Knowledge of current trends in information technology and scholarly communication;
• Demonstrated experience and success in managing personnel, budgets, collections, services, and information technologies;
• Commitment to cultural diversity and equal opportunity;
• A highly collegial, collaborative and open management style and the ability to develop and sustain collaborative relationships;
• Demonstrated effectiveness in fundraising; and
• Ability to communicate the value and impact of an academic library to the larger campus community.
