Scientist will be involved in studying the role of secretagogue metabolism in the stimulation of insulin secretion by the pancreatic beta cell. The candidate will perform experiments that investigate the role of mitochondrial biosynthesis in supporting insulin secretion. Will identify research problems, design research methodology, perform and supervise research that is relevant to, but not limited to, the above mentioned study, prepare the results for presentation to scientific meetings and publication in scientific journals. Will be required to design and oversee experiments to knockdown gene expression of metabolic enzymes using siRNA technology and analyze the enzyme levels followed by measurements of relevant metabolites, as well as preparing samples for analysis of flux through relevant metabolic pathways using radio-isotopically-labeled metabolites or using mass spectrometry analysis of metabolites labeled with heavy isotopes.

Minimum of four years experience in a biochemistry, molecular biology or chemistry laboratory. Extensive experience with molecular biology and cell biology methodologies are required. Moderate to high level of understanding of standard biochemical laboratory methodology such as enzyme assay methods and analytical procedures, including HPLC and GC and principles of microarrays are considered as assets.
