The Baltimore campus is the founding campus of the University of Maryland, today, this vibrant, urban community is comprised of a 61-acre research and technology complex and more than 60 buildings. With over 6,000 students and nearly 7,000 faculty members and staff, the University is an economic engine that returns more than $15 in economic activity for every $1 of state general funds appropriation. The University is actively seeking nominations and applications for the newly reorganized position of vice president and chief academic and research officer (CARO). The vice president, working collaboratively with the President and campus leadership, is the University's lead on academic matters, including, research, education, and service. The individual will be a key leader within the University structure and will provide essential leadership for its academic enterprise. In addition to supporting the University's rich environment of interdisciplinary research, the vice president will have oversight and responsibility for four University units - the Graduate School, Campus Life Services, Academic Services, and the Health Sciences and Human Services Library. The vice president reports directly to the president and is a member of the University's executive leadership team which includes the president and the deans of the other schools.

The successfully candidate must have administrative experiences that demonstrate leadership, management skills, and fiscal responsibility. This position requires an earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education in a recognized academic discipline and a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship sufficient to be eligible for the rank of full professor. The preferred candidate will also have at least ten years of administrative experience at the college or university level in progressively responsible positions, with at least five years at a level equivalent to dean or higher. The applicant should also be committed to a strategic orientation for decision-making, interdisciplinary and multicultural programming, enhancement of the student experience, growth of research and strong university-community linkages including the ability to attract human and financial resources to the University.
