Detailed Job Description

Job ID:  884.  Provide support to clients by analyzing, defining, developing, implementing, training and maintaining computer applications.


  1. Develops computer application specifications.
  2. Designs, develops, modifies, tests, and implements computer applications.
  3. Provides support and problem resolution of computer applications.
  4. Provide formal and informal training on a variety of computer application related topics (including programs, and functions) to IT Services and to clients.
  5. Creates and maintains documentation on computer applications. 
  6. Actively promotes a customer-oriented approach throughout IT Services.
  7. Participates in professional development activities.
  8. Participates in cross-functional projects.
  9. Coordinates small development projects.
  10. Follows established security best practices to identify/avoid application security vulnerabilities
  11. May occasionally teach one credit bearing course, per semester, on an as needed basis.
  12. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Systems Analysis, Computer Science or a related field earned by date of hire. or

Bachelor’s degree in another field by date of hire and 2+ years full-time work experience developing web-based applications. or

4+ years full-time work experience developing web-based applications.

Demonstrated experience (either work experience or educational experience) developing web-based applications.

Demonstrated experience (either work experience or educational experience) developing applications using database management systems.

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above may be substituted. Experience in these knowledge/skills/abilities may be earned concurrently.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience highly desired in:

  • Developing client-facing, web-based applications using HTML and CSS
  • Using Java and related tools to develop web based applications
  • Using SQL in application development to manage data
  • Developing applications using PHP, Perl or similar languages

Demonstrated experience desired in:

  • Apache httpd server administration
  • Tomcat or WebLogic application development and server administration
  • Application development and/or third party application deployment in Windows or Linux environments
  • Developing web applications that are accessibility (ADA) compliant and hardened against web attacks (SQL injection, Cross-site scripting, etc.)
  • Developing and executing test plans and/or developing automated tests
  • XML, JSON, and other related data formats 
  • Web Services (SOAP, REST, SOA)
  • Source code management (SVN, Git, etc.)
  • Developing and maintaining reports
  • Experience with operational reporting using SQR or another similar tool.

Verbal and written communication skills; including communicating with technical and non-technical clients, and with clients and staff at all organizational levels.

Customer service skills; including diplomatically, patiently, and successfully handling complaints, problems, questions, conflict, and suggestions.

Ability to analyze causes of client problems and generate solutions.

Ability and willingness to work as part of a team and be accountable to that team.

Ability to take the initiative and be proactive in all aspects of this position’s listed responsibilities.

Ability to prioritize projects and work on multiple projects concurrently.
