This position will support Institutional Research & Information’s needs for increased database and technology support within the reporting environment of IRI including Oracle and other reporting databases. Produces SQL scripts, writes/modifies views, uploads to databases, and performs database maintenance for IRI database files and structures. Works with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including DBAs, data architects, programmers, analysts, data custodians and stewards, and nontechnical users. Requires excellent organizational skills (including careful documentation) to manage multiple projects and being able to work closely with clients.
Design, develop and maintain relational databases for data storage and data mining. Perform data warehouse design and testing, including data design, database architecture, metadata, and repository creation. Develop processes and procedures for entering information into data warehousing systems for ensuring reliability and security of entered information. Analyzes and determines informational needs and elements, data relationships and attributes, data flow and storage requirements for data output and reporting capabilities. Seeks continuous improvement in performance of data warehouse and ensures security of data. Considered highly skilled and proficient in discipline. Conducts complex work important to the organization. Works with minimal supervision with latitude for independent judgment.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field plus three years of experience related to the essential functions/duties of the position OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling seven years.
4-5 years of experience working with Oracle databases, particularly in regards to writing SQL/PSQL. Ideal candidates would also have a Bachelors or Master’s degree and experience extracting enterprise data in higher education, particularly in the Banner system. Familiarity with business intelligence tools such as Tableau, ARGOS or COGNOS and familiarity with database modeling tools and data documentation at the enterprise-level. Familiarity with using data in an institutional research setting is desirable and preferred.
Knowledge of database management/administration and programming. Knowledge of operational data stores and enterprise data warehousing and how to use these in a reporting environment.
Knowledge of reporting tools and how they can be used to access the data within the databases that the department uses for data collection and reporting.
Knowledge of database structures and how to optimize them for reporting and analysis.
Knowledge of how to construct views and tables in an Oracle environment.
Proficiency in Oracle SQL, PSQL and Microsoft Suite products and other business intelligence tools such as Tableau, SPSS, ARGOS, COGNOS, and similar types of reporting and analysis software.
Ability to optimize databases for reporting and storage of data for longitudinal and trending analysis. Ability to help with the emerging need to utilize tools that will enable IRI to mine data that is stored in institutional data structures, sometimes called analysis of “big data.”
