Detailed Job Description

Job ID:  747.  Miami University is seeking an assistant director to contribute to the mission of the office of student activities by facilitating campus programming through the advising of a programming board and committees. Student Activities is responsible for the programming outcomes for the campus programming board (MAP) and late night programming efforts:

  • Miami Activities and Programming (MAP) and its leadership team coordinate the efforts of four divisions including: Impact (large university events like Homecoming, Welcome Week, and Family Weekend), ACE- Arts, Concerts, and Entertainment, Miami Connections (festivals and spirit events), and Innov8(homegrown innovative events)

The assistant director also plays a central role in supporting the management, activities and development of student organizations; the facilitation and implementation of leadership development programs; and the development and execution of educational programming around strategic co-curricular involvement.


Advising Student Programming

  • Advise a programming board and additional programming committees as needed
  • Recruit, train and support practicum students and additional advisors working with programming groups
  • As needed, serve on university-wide planning committees such as Homecoming, Family Weekend and Hazing Prevention
  • Coordinate Late Night Programming initiatives on campus within MAP and other university sponsored events
  • Ensure accurate financial records and responsible budget practices are kept for all programming efforts
  • Implement and administer an evaluation/assessment program that is objective, improves future programming and evaluates both the event and the event planning process
  • Foster collaboration between programming boards and other student organizations and ensure that programming is inclusive of diverse populations

Student Organizations & SLANT Design

  • Hire, supervise and train, 5 student employees in our SLANT design department.  This is a group of student graphic designers who create marketing materials for student organizations.
  • Advise student organizations on university guidelines and protocol, contracts, marketing and event planning
  • Advise student organization programming as needed
  • Insure the implementation of healthy, positive campus events, particularly on weekend evenings/nights
  • Assist in the development of Advisor Resources and Programming

Leadership Development Programs

  • Plan and implement leadership programs targeted at emerging and student organization leaders
  • Manage and develop student-oriented leadership resources and information, such as the leadership library and leadership handout series
  • Collaborate with the Wilks Leadership Institute to ensure that leadership programming outcomes are consistent with the efforts of other student affairs and campus partners

Additional Duties

  • Assists the director in providing leadership for the office of student activities and fraternity and sorority life in establishing and fulfilling its mission and strategic priorities; and in conducting daily operations and responsibilities
  • Supervise a graduate assistant
  • As needed, supervise practicum students working with the office
  • Participate in outreach activities promoting co-curricular involvement
  • Support and maintain office standards and policies
  • Respond to student, parent, colleague and community concerns, issues and needs
  • Coordinate online and printed social media and marketing strategies for events, service and information related to areas of responsibility
  • Serve on departmental, divisional, and University-wide committees and task forces
  • Serve on special projects and committees as needed
  • Other duties as assigned, provided they support the mission of the office

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in college student personnel/student affairs or related field is required at time of hire
  • Graduate assistant or full-time experience working in campus activities, leadership development, student union, student organization programming or related areas is required
  • Experience working with or advising student groups as a graduate assistant or full-time employee is required
  • Ability and willingness to work  irregular hours including evenings and weekends
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs (specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience presenting programs/events and facilitating leadership development are strongly preferred
  • Experience implementing major campus-wide programming is preferred
  • Experience assessing the efficacy of programs and services is preferred
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to diversity, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to relate well to student, faculty, staff, volunteers, community members and administrators.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices in student activities and leadership development programs and able to infuse research with practical experience to create intentional experiences for students
  • Willingness to work in a team and collaborative environment
  • Web/graphic design and/or web editing skills
