The Math Lab Director is responsible for the operational management and administrative direction of the Math Lab and supports the mission and vision of University College and the university. This full-time staff member develops and manages strategic planning, finance and budgeting, tutor hiring and training, materials, and marketing. The director’s primary responsibility is the smooth and effective daily operations of the Math Lab, including the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of tutors; overseeing and managing the delivery of services; projecting and tracking budget expenditures; coordinating services with faculty members; developing and overseeing marketing efforts; and carrying out assessment related to programs and services. The director supervises 50+ part-time student employees and volunteers each semester, provides leadership and direction in policy development and implementation, and is responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships to attain departmental goals and objectives.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus three years of staff level experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling seven years.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in Education, Math or Math Education or a closely related field. Two years of full-time experience in a supervisory position. Experience in tutoring and/or teaching is desirable.
Knowledge of learning styles, tutoring methods, and educational objectives.
Knowledge of best practices and processes for peer tutoring and supplemental instruction.
Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Excellent attention to detail.
Proficiency in the use of computers and standard software programs and desktop publishing software.
Marketing, public relations or advertising skills.
Skill in tracking and managing statistics and information needed for decision-making and program improvement.
Ability to solve problems and interact effectively with tutors, students, and faculty to promote positive results.
Ability to coordinate with the Tutoring and Academic Skills Services team and Dean of University College to set and achieve goals and collaborate on special projects.
Ability to be self-directed and to complete tasks without supervision.
Ability to determine program outcomes and assessment measures to ensure quality of tutoring services.
Ability to facilitate and maintain program certifications and accreditation requirements.
Ability to analyze and solve problems.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to prioritize and complete tasks expeditiously.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to follow written and oral procedures and instructions.
Ability to manage a tutorial laboratory and have skill in tutoring.
Ability to supervise.
Ability to recruit and hire employees.
Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections.
