Responsibilities

We invite candidates to apply for an Assistant Professor position (tenure track) in the Department of Sociology starting in the 2013-2014 academic year.  We seek a candidate with a strong commitment to undergraduate education whose primary research and teaching interests are in the area of global and transnational sociology.  Specific areas of expertise within global sociology may include social movements, gender and development, ethnic conflict, nationalism, migration, or international political economy.  


The successful candidate will be expected to develop two new upper division courses in their areas of expertise.  They should also be able to teach introduction to sociology, social problems, theory, and methods. 

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach in the unique January Term and Collegiate Seminar (great books) programs at the College.  Contractual responsibilities are equivalent to seven (7) courses per year.  The typical teaching load is six (6) courses and one (1) course reassigned for dedicated work with students.  Faculty members at Saint Mary’s are also expected to engage in scholarship, serve on College committees, advise students, and work collegially in a highly collaborative and culturally diverse environment.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the mission of the College, which is informed, animated and expressed through its Catholic, Lasallian, and Liberal Arts traditions.


Experience and Qualifications:

 

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in sociology by the fall of 2013.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate teaching effectiveness in sociology.  A record of scholarship is also expected.
