The board of trustees and the chancellor of the San Mateo County Community College District seek a college president with the skills, aptitudes and experience to help Cañada College fulfill its mission.
Cañada College opened in 1968 and is located in the Pacific coast foothills overlooking the San Francisco bay peninsula along the Silicon Valley corridor. One of the most convenient and beautiful suburban campuses in California, Cañada College offers many academic and career choices in a friendly and caring environment. In addition to our main 112-acre campus, day, evening and weekend students are also served at several off-campus sites throughout San Mateo county.
Cañada College provides a broad array of programs supported by an innovative learning center. Our transfer and degree program rates are consistently ranked in the top 10% of California community colleges based on the most recent IPEDS data. Our commitment to transfer students also can be seen in our internationally recognized Phi Theta Kappa honor society, the MESA program, and the Middle College high school program.
In addition to our transfer program, Cañada College offers a variety of programs for non-native speakers, vocationally focused students, and students desiring programs that are vocational with a transfer option. Among such programs are ESL, interior design, fashion design, early childhood education, and radiologic technology.
Our athletic teams have a rich history of championships with several teams in the northern California finals in the past years.
In 2001, Cañada College became the first California community college to establish a university center funded by special legislative appropriation. The Center for International and University Studies partners with California universities to offer bachelor's degrees in select programs and certificates. Other college partners include K-12, local government agencies, and business and job training centers such as Job Train. In addition, the center is undergoing a significant expansion of the college's international student program.
Cañada College is a federally designated Hispanic serving institution and has an enrollment of approximately 7000 students. The college community is richly diverse in terms of ethnicity, culture and socioeconomic status with 38% of the students Hispanic, 32% white, 13% Asian/Pacific Islander/Filipino, 4% African American and 5% multi-race. The students are generally under the age of 30 (61%) with 26% of the students taking 12 units or more and 37% taking only evening courses.
The District: The San Mateo County Community College District, one of 72 community college districts in California, is comprised of Skyline College (San Bruno), the College of San Mateo (San Mateo), Cañada College (Redwood City) and the central administration building in San Mateo. In addition to its three colleges, the district also operates several community-centered training facilities in San Mateo county.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Plan and develop the overall academic direction for the college and district in conjunction with the chancellor and shared governance groups
2. Plan and recommend the instructional and student services programs, college budget, and organizational structure of the college
3. Collaborate with district and college staff and the community the college serves on strategic planning, policy development and resource allocation
4. Serve as a strong advocate for the college within the multi-college district and at local, state, national, and international levels
5. Facilitate the collaboration of instructional and student services faculty and staff to promote success for all students
6. Provide leadership for the implementation of policies and procedures that ensure and enhance equitable opportunity for college students and staff
7. Provide leadership for sound fiscal planning in the development and management of the institution budget and externally funded initiatives
8. Broaden communication and actively engage the community to enhance and strengthen college and community relations and partnerships
9. Represent the college as chief executive officer at community and business events, and at meetings with government and other agency representatives
10. Lead and coordinate innovative efforts for staff development and the improvement of instructional and student services programs
11. Provide staffing recommendations in compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity principles and guidelines
12. Recommend the selection, retention, promotion and termination of college personnel
13. Facilitate the college's accreditation process
14. Support the implementation of safety training programs and services for students and staff
15. Oversee college facilities to ensure that they are functional, energy-efficient and safe
1. Possession of at least a master's degree from an accredited college or university
2. The equivalent of five years of progressively responsible management experience, including at least two years of leadership in education
3. Demonstrated management and leadership qualities and skills
4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic and cultural backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
