JOB ID:  650  Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to growing and maintaining plants on University grounds.

Duties

Plans, schedules, and directs the planting, cultivation, propagation, and care of turf, flowers, ground covers, shrubs, and trees; assigns duties to subordinate employees; schedules and directs the application of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc.; schedules, directs and performs minor hardscape installation; determines the priority of horticultural work assignments and/or activities; guides and gives technical assistance in the performance of employees' assigned duties; supervises work in progress to insure that proper and satisfactory horticultural methods, work schedules, safety and other work standards are being maintained; instructs, demonstrates, and otherwise trains grounds-keeping employees in proper horticultural methods, techniques, use of related equipment, plant identification, insect and disease identification, treatment etc. to develop maximum effectiveness and consistency of performance; coordinates the activities of assigned functions with other departmental and/or University organizational units as required; initiates purchase of horticultural supplies; prepares and maintains records and reports and provides assistance with projects and procedures as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires nine months of training beyond high school in Horticulture and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires pesticide applicator's and driver's license.  

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of plant care techniques; knowledge of office equipment and computer; supervisory skills; mechanical skills. Physical effort usually requires considerable standing, walking, climbing, and operating equipment.  Some lifting of materials weighing up to 70 pounds.  Periodic assignments given which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations.  There may be considerable noise generated by machine operation and some machinery and chemical usage may present an element of personal risk of injury.

  • Possess a strong working knowledge of irrigation systems installation and repair.
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of storm water pond management.
  • Possess the ability to work with contractors and in-house project managers on irrigation projects.
  • Possess basic MS Office skills.
  • Have a working knowledge of storm water systems and in-ground infrastructure distribution.
