Detailed Job Description

This is a three year grant funded program here at San Juan College. Continuation of position is contingent upon continued funding.
• This position is responsible for the overall management and growth of the Center for Working Families towards sustainability and meeting student and community needs.

Duties & Responsibilities


• Responsible for ensuring the approaches and best practices of the Center for Working Families model are honored in program design, evaluation, and implementation.

• Directs the programs and operations of the Center for Working Families; directs scheduling, customer services, marketing, data tracking, and budget management functions.

• Work in collaboration with management to seek grant opportunities and develop funding proposals.

• Model and build unique partnerships within the college to help break down internal silos between divisions, schools and departments.

• Cultivate relationships that nurture SJC’s diverse student, staff and faculty populations.

• Develop and maintain working relationships with program funders, partners, employers, institutions, and other not-for-profit organizations to meet student needs and ensure program success.

• Facilitate CWF community-based advisory committee.

• Facilitate CWF student advisory committee.

• Responsible for reporting to program funders and other key stakeholders.

• Effectively utilize data and outcomes to drive program decisions and design.

• Develop Memorandums of Understanding and independent contracts with partners and vendors.

• Develop and maintain program flow-charts, manuals, systems, and policies and procedures.

• Coordinates program assessment and reporting functions.

• Work in collaboration with independent contractors to evaluate overall Center operations and programs.

• Promotes innovation to meet the dynamic and changing needs of target population and staff.

• Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel.

• Manages a caseload of at-risk students; develops individual student planners for students and monitors student progress.

• Serves on the College Council.

• Collaborates in college-wide efforts to promote student success and completion; cultivates and maintains partnerships with other campus departments and programs; cultivates partnerships with community resources.

• Facilitates campus-wide efforts to understand our students and identify resources and supports aligned to our mission.

• Administers web-based case management software and trains internal and community agency software users.
• Oversees the recruitment of students into the program.

• Performs related duties as assigned by the President.

The President of the College assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.


Guidelines include Federal, State, private foundation laws, rules, regulations, grant requirements, and college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position develops departmental guidelines.


• The work consists of varied duties in directing the operations of the college’s Center for Working Families. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to direct the Center for Working Families. Success in this position results in an institutional shift in understanding and engaging SJC students and positively impacting student retention and community and industry partnerships and compliance with state, federal and accrediting standards.

CWF services and activities will impact all areas of the institution as the SJC model is implemented at an institutional level.

• This position works closely with external stakeholders including a community-based advisory committee. The Director works closely with area employers, school districts, economic development agencies, state government service providers and non-profit service providers.


• Contacts are typically with the CLT (College Leadership Team), external stakeholders including a community-based advisory committee, area employers, school districts, economic development agencies, state government service providers and non-profit service providers.

• Contacts include co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, granting agents, students, parents, volunteers, and members of the general public.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.


• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.

• The work is typically performed in an office setting.


This position has direct supervision over Navigator (1), Administrative Assistant (1) work study students (2-3), community volunteers (undetermined).


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • A Master’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field is required. • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department is required. • Three to five years of related experience directing programs and supervising staff is required.

Starting Salary

$56,960 - $58,909
