Job ID:  559.  The Learning Specialist/Coordinator is responsible for implementing academic support and services for students in the areas of effective learning strategies and to offer leadership and coordination of a major program within the Rinella Learning Center.   As a Learning Specialist the position provides direct service to students through individualized academic counseling with a focus on learning, time management, and organization strategies; content specific tutoring; college transitions; navigating the university system; and self-advocacy. As a Coordinator the position oversees, coordinates, monitors, and assesses the effectiveness of a learning center program (e.g., tutorial services, supplemental instruction, and/or teaching/outreach).  This is a full-time, 12 month position.


  • Provide individual academic counseling/coaching for students experiencing academic difficulty.

  • Manage daily operations for a learning center program (e.g., tutorial services, supplemental instruction, and/or teaching/outreach).

  • Teach a study strategies course and/or a tutor training course.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve conflicts related to learning center program.

  • Serve as student advocate and assist in resolving student concerns.

  • Document all contacts with students including letters, telephone calls, conferences, consultations, etc.

  • Participate in professional and campus activities and research related to academic support and learning strategies.

  • Consult and meet with families, university professionals, and mental health/medical professionals when necessary.

  • Consult with and advise university staff and faculty on issues related to student academic support and students with unique learning challenges.

  • Develop and implement assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness of service.

  • Serve as a liaison between the Rinella Learning Center and other university offices.

  • Develop and implement materials on learning/study strategies and other topics relevant to student learning needs.

  • Prepare reports pertaining to position responsibilities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Student Affairs/College Student Personnel, educational psychology, counseling, social work, or related field; and two years of direct experience working with college student populations.  Additional qualifications include:

  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate information to multiple audiences (i.e. students, faculty, parents, and other helping professionals).

  • Predisposition toward stewardship and collaboration, within and across the Division of Student Affairs.

  • An inclination toward and ability to define goals and assess outcomes.

  • A service orientation and a commitment to working in a team.

  • A willingness to not only adjust to but seek out and initiate change in the quest for continuous improvement.

  • Facility with new and changing technologies (specifically assistive technologies).

Preferred Qualifications

Coursework in the area of psychoeducational assessment
