The position reports to the Director of Advising and Counseling.
The Advisor/Counselor is responsible for assisting students toward their personal, career and educational goals. Responsibilities include providing students with developmental academic advising, academic goal clarification, career planning and personal counseling; utilizing Datatel/Web Advisor for advisement and registration purposes; administering and interpreting the Accuplacer; assisting with new student orientations, various advisement and counseling projects. Serve on a wide range of committees, maintain high involvement with campus community and events, with the ability to lead and organize workshops and training sessions. Knowledge of crisis intervention skills, strong referral skills, ability to do short term counseling. Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Master’s Degree in Counseling or Social Work and current New Mexico LPCC, LMSW or LISW licensure or eligible licensure in place by 10-31-12 and two years of counseling experience is required. Academic advising experience in higher education setting preferred. Must be personable, articulate, and be able to interpret policies and procedures. Must be able to work in a fast paced, team oriented environment of constant change and variety. Must have knowledge of current evaluation techniques and the ability to interpret assessment instruments. A strong background in verbal and written communications and strong skills in effective decision making and problem solving are desirable. Strong computer skills, with the ability and willingness to learn various software and database programs. Prefer experience working with diverse populations, advisement center concept and working with at risk students. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to the community college philosophy and value diversity. Involvement with community projects and activities preferred. Some evening and weekend hours required.
Physical Requirements: Varied sitting, standing, walking, bending with minimal lifting up to 25lbs unassisted within an office environment. All candidates are subject to a Criminal Background Investigation prior to any offer of employment.
