The Mathematics Department at Mission College is now accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track instructor who shares our excitement for teaching and our commitment to excellence in education. We are looking for someone with a willingness to help our department grow and who will enjoy working with our diverse student body. Mission College serves a region of the San Francisco Bay Area that includes urban neighborhoods, business centers and residential communities. Assignment

This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position that begins in Fall 2015. Two openings are anticipated. Instructional assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru Saturday, as needed and rotate among the Mathematics faculty. It is expected that over several semesters all levels of Mathematics offered at the college will be taught. This position is represented by the Association of College Educators (ACE).

PLEASE NOTE:
We have begun a district-wide classification and compensation study. The compensation study will provide information on what other employers pay employees who are performing similar duties. The District will use this information to ensure that our employees are adequately compensated.

The classification & compensation study started in November 2014 and is expected to take approximately 9-12 months to complete. As a result of this study, it is possible for the compensation to change in this position opening.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education – Possess one of the following:

  • Master’s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND master’s degree in statistics, physics or mathematics education; OR
  • Possess a valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in mathematics; OR
  • The equivalent of the above.

2. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated pattern of innovative teaching/learning instructional methods, approaches and strategies such as online/hybrid delivery model, learning communities, contextualized and accelerated learning models.
  • Ability to teach effectively and to communicate well with students from diverse mathematical, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, both in and out of the classroom.
  • Understanding and appreciation for the tasks of teaching mathematics courses and developing innovative teaching strategies that promote student success at a community college.
  • Experience with technology currently used in mathematics instruction and willingness to explore newly developing technologies.
  • Demonstrated pattern of participation in professional growth activities and an active role in working within a cross-disciplinary team environment with faculty,student groups, and college support services from within, as well as outside, the Department and Division.
  • Is committed to and has a demonstrated record of teaching Basic Skill level classes through STEM classes such as Calculus and beyond – or shows a strong potential to do so.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation, in class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class (scheduling time beyond normal office hours if necessary), maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records conforming with state requirements and stated district and college needs.
  • Submit, when due, all necessary reports, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, classes and office hour schedules.
  • Follow course outline for each course with the appropriate division offices.
  • Post and maintain office hours each week in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Office hours must be posted and filed in the division chair’s office on or before the start of the semester. Office hours must be scheduled in no less than 30-minute segments.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus as per instructions in the Faculty handbook at the beginning of the course.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate positive communication skills within the college community.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
  • Assume institutional responsibilities, which are of value to the department, division, college and/or District such as: actively participate in the spirit of shared governance in department, division, college and district institutional responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship, supervision of support staff, student recruitment and retention, curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as assigned.

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $49,659 to $77,282 annually, based upon academic achievement, teaching and related experience (Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1-9).
