The assistant dean provides oversight of all student affairs issues and academic programs. The position is 1.0 FTE; (fte allocation per year will vary based on administrative and school needs).

Assistant Dean for Educational Programs and Student Services

The School of Social Work at The University of Alabama invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Educational Programs and Student Services. Applications will be accepted until April 15, 2015; expected start date is May 15, 2015. We seek applicants with an MSW and PhD in social work or closely related field.

This will be a 12 month, tenured or tenure-earning appointment. A stipend is allocated for this position and paid out over 12 months.


Assistant Dean for Educational Programs and Student Services

The Assistant Dean provides administrative assistance to the Dean and is deputized to act in place of the Dean. The Assistant Dean works in collaboration with other university administrators in the School, and with faculty, staff and students to carry out the School’s mission and goals. Additionally, the Assistant Dean serves as a member of key university committees requiring representation from the School.

Reporting Relationship
The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Dean, directs the Office of Student Services and the Office of the Registrar and provides oversight for the BSW, MSW, PhD and Field Education programs, Continuing Education programs and adjunct faculty appointments.

General Duties

a. Serves as ex-officio member of the BSW, MSW, PhD and Field Program Committees; provides regular updates/communications to dean regarding committee activities/needs/requests/concerns.
b. Provides oversight and leadership of all student affairs issues assuring access, success, responsiveness and coordination.
c. Assists Dean in ensuring effective and efficient management of academic programs and climate of school.
d. Serves as the Dean’s designee in student issues such as academic misconduct, sexual harassment, grade appeals, and exceptions to academic policies
Integrated Academic Planning Coordination

a. Member of the Executive Committee
b. Provides coordination with Fiscal Manager regarding teaching and faculty schedules to ensure correct payment and distribution of funds (e.g., grants, cost share,etc).
c. In consultation with Program Chairs and Field Coordinator, the Assistant Dean chairs and oversees Workload Administration Group (note: new title, same function) which involves using data from the faculty teaching surveys to coordinate course scheduling activities and workload plans for all teaching faculty.
d. Develops a workload calendar to coordinate due dates, requesting faculty to complete necessary workload survey forms
e. Coordinates information and prioritizes data between programs so there is a balance of interest in teaching and meeting the needs of programmatic curricula needs in a timely manner.
f. Coordinates activities between program committees involving curricular and policy workgroup activities.
g. Coordinates technology planning (e.g., Continuing Studies and On-line) for academic programs as needed.
h. Hires and evaluates adjunct faculty in collaboration with Program Chairs, Field Coordinator and Adjunct Advisory Committee (TBD).
Assessment and Continuous Quality Improvement Planning, Implementation and Integration

a. Along with the Dean, Program Chairs and Faculty Committees, the Assistsant Dean provides oversight and coordination in planning of SSW Assessment and Continuous Quality Improvement protocols as specified by CSWE and other bodies as needed (e.g., SACS).
b. Demonstrates leadership in executing continuous quality improvement activities, produces reports which demonstrate results, and develops feedback mechanisms to assure that needed improvements are part of the work of academic affairs and presented in a transparent, co-created and ongoing manner.
c. Contributes ideas and demonstrates leadership to assure an effective learning organization framework for academic programs (including coordinating/leading recruitment/welcoming/orientation of new faculty; coordination, along with the dean, with faculty peer mentor program for new faculty).
d. Provides posting of required assessment findings and data to the SSW website (re: CSWE requirements).
e. Assists the Dean in strategic planning, in collaboration with other administrators, faculty and staff.
f. Coordinates program evaluation to provide an evidence base for program improvement and to meet CSWE and SACS accreditation requirements and coordinate the overall accreditation processes.
Community Partnerships

a. Provides ongoing assistance to the Dean, Field Office and others as needed to expand, diversify and improve the depth and connectivity of our community partnerships.
b. Ensures continuous and effective communication regarding local, regional, national and international trends in social work and presents a cohesive plan to a variety of stakeholders.
University Committees and Reports

a. Inventory regular university-required reports to assure academic program readiness to deliver reports in a timely manner.
b. Coordinates completion of reports as required in consultation with the dean.
c. Represents SSW on university committees appropriate to the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Services position; also represent the School and Dean on community, university and school committees as assigned by the dean.
d. Prepares and coordinate the development of internal and external reports, handbooks, and other documents, including CSWE annual statistical resport; accreditation reports; handbook for faculty and staff, students and field education and updates of the Graduate and Undergraduate Catalogs.
Accreditation/Reaffirmation Coordination

a. Works with BSW, MSW and Field Program Chairs to assess needs, mobilize resources and complete self-study and requisite coordination of revision components (through liaison with administrative as well as faculty-specific elements).
b. Support Program Chair’s responsible for implementing self-studies.
c. Provide leadership regarding knowledge of best practices, and advocacy for Program Chair’s when necessary; provide models of assessment if appropriate.
d. Galvanizes SSW faculty toward the completion of the self-studies when necessary.
Student Services
a. directs student recruitment and retention efforts;
b. supervises support staff personnel assigned to Assistant Dean
c. coordinates, with program chairs and field coordinator, student orientation
d. oversees advising, registration and graduation procedures and documentation
e. coordinates student scholarships and financial aid

Other duties
a. Assists Dean in activities related to Faculty and Staff Awards
b. Other duties as assigned by Dean (special projects).

. have administrative experience in a School of Social Work and are familiar with (UA) university operations
. have knowledge of program planning, evaluation and assessment, curriculum development and monitoring students’ progress
. are collegial and can work effectively across and within multiple academic, student and community audiences
. have experience in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education and research
. have a history of leadership in school, university, professional associations, and or community agencies
