The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for providing executive direction and leadership to the clinical enterprise of the College, with the purpose of creating and maintaining excellence in the delivery of patient-centered clinical care. The CMO functions as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs for the College, is a member of the College’s senior leadership, and has a role with the Capstone Health Services Foundation as defined in the current bylaws of the CHSF. The CMO will exercise medical oversight of the clinical operations in partnership with the senior clinical leadership ensuring efficient and effective services and operations that meet the educational, community-oriented and patient-oriented needs of our stakeholders, and a work environment for providers and staff that is effective, healthy and innovative. and public needs of the community.

The College of Community Health Sciences at The University of Alabama seeks a Chief Medical
Officer/Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to provide executive direction and leadership to the clinical enterprise of the College, with the purpose of creating and maintaining excellence in the delivery of patient-centered clinical care. The College looks forward to a bright future in addressing the challenges in health care and preparing the next generation of family physicians.
The College is dedicated to the mission of improving and promoting the health of individuals and communities in Alabama and the region through leadership in medical education and primary care; the provision of high quality, accessible, health care services; and scholarship. As a primary care focused
organization, our ambulatory practices are our most important “laboratory” for training and learning, for applying and studying population health principles, as well as for direct provision of service to communities.
The College of Community Health Sciences was founded in 1972 with its unique mandate to train family physicians for rural service in Alabama. The College’s Family Medicine Residency Program recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary, with over 400 graduates, 92% located in the region and half in rural practice. In addition, the College has received national recognition of its rural programs, which have been consulted by numerous organizations seeking to replicate its results. Our faculty-driven community practice represents the largest multidisciplinary group medical practice in West Alabama. We strive to provide high quality patient-centered, efficient clinical services to all of the communities we serve, including the faculty, staff and student population of The University. Candidates must hold a MD or DO degree, a current DEA certificate, current (or eligibility for) Alabama licensure and be board certified, with a primary care field strongly preferred. Candidates may consider either tenure/tenure earning or non-tenure clinical tracks. Consideration will be given to qualified physicians of any specialty. 7 years minimum of clinical experience and 3 to 5 years of major administrative responsibility required, and prior clinical teaching and academic experience is expected. The CMO will function as a member of the College’s senior leadership, including a role with the Capstone Health Services Foundation (the faculty practice plan) as defined in its bylaws. He/she will exercise medical oversight of the clinical operations in partnership with the COO and CFO; ensure efficient and effective services and operations; support a work environment for providers and staff that is effective, healthy and innovative, and that addresses needs of the community; and will oversee a robust clinical quality program creating an environment of continuous learning. The CMO will have a faculty appointment and function in a faculty role in his/her medical discipline at between a 0.3 to 0.5 FTE level, as negotiated.
