The University of La Verne is a 124 year old, independent, comprehensive, doctoral granting institution in southern California with an emphasis on research and publication. Classified by Carnegie as a Community-Engaged University, La Verne offers high quality, liberal arts and professional degree programs at the undergraduate to doctoral levels to traditional-age and adult learners. The main campus is located in La Verne, 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles, along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The College of Education and Organizational Leadership is recognized as providing premier programs of higher learning engaged in the training of leaders and professional educators throughout California. The College encompasses two of the University’s strongest and most recognized departments: Advanced Studies in Education and Human Development, and Education and Teacher Development. It is renowned for the excellence of the elementary and secondary teachers who complete its Teacher Education program and has maintained this regional reputation for over half a century. In addition, the College has the only approved program for Reading Specialists at a private university in southern California. That program is anchored by a state-of-the-art Literacy Center which serves more than 350 students grades K-12 who are tutored free of charge. As a result of this tutoring, students increase an average of 1.7 grade level equivalents after just ten hours of instruction. Another innovative program, the International Child Life Specialist Program, is one of only two programs of its kind (and the only graduate program of its kind) west of the Mississippi. The program in Child Development is one of the largest in California and has as its centerpiece an award-winning Child Development Center in partnership with The Learning Centers at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. The College has the second largest program in California in Pupil Personnel Services. The College has earned successful state and federal accreditation for all programs ( CTC, CAEP, and WASC).
Advanced Studies in Education and Human Development
The College offers masters programs, certificates, and credentials in a broad range of fields, including Reading, School Counseling, School Psychology, Special Education, Educational Management in Child Development, and Child Life.
Education and Teacher Development
The College offers Child Development and Educational Studies undergraduate programs. The department offers credentials in multiple and single subjects, bilingual authorization, and California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) certification. There are also two masters degrees within this department: Special Emphasis, M.Ed and Advanced Teaching Skills, M.Ed.
Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership
The College has one of the largest and most successful programs in the country for training executive leaders at the doctoral level. More than 125 graduates of the Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership are currently superintendents, more than 10 others hold key central office leadership positions, and approximately 165 are serving as principals in California school districts. Over 100 of the doctoral graduates hold leadership roles in higher education while another 40 serve important leadership roles in the California Department of Education. Increasingly, the graduates hold leadership positions in health, law enforcement, and industry.
The Dean of the College of Education and Organizational Leadership is the chief academic, administrative, and financial officer of the College and reports to the Provost. The Dean assumes responsibility for College accreditation and implements outcomes assessment for all academic programs; insures academic quality; oversees recruitment, evaluation, promotion and tenure of 69 faculty; supports faculty enrichment and development in teaching, scholarship, and solicitation of grants; oversees the planning and execution of the budget, and actively participates in fundraising.
It is expected that the new Dean will be a visionary leader of unquestioned integrity who possesses a collegial management style, and a demonstrated ability to foster relationships with the University community. The new Dean will demonstrate a commitment to building strong relationships with the University’s regional and online campuses (ROC), including regular visitation to all sites. In addition to supporting and implementing the 2020 Strategic Vision and the University’s Strategic Plan for Diversity, the new Dean will possess a passionate commitment to the mission of the University, including support for the University’s emphasis on ethical reasoning, diversity and inclusivity, community and civic engagement, and life long learning.
Required Qualification – Education
• Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in a field represented in the College or related discipline
• Record of successful teaching and service in higher education
• A distinguished record of scholarship and publication
• At least 5 years’ experience in academic leadership in higher education and the P-12 educational system
• Evidence of building partnerships and fostering collaboration between the college, university, P -12 schools and external constituents
• Experience supporting innovative enrollment strategies for undergraduate and graduate students
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity in building a multicultural teaching and learning community
• A strong record of leadership and the proven ability to think strategically, prioritize effectively, and act decisively
• Track record of fund raising, including major gifts and grant writing
• Experience and demonstrated leadership in a shared governance environment that supports faculty growth and development in teaching, scholarship, and professional activities
• Evidence of strong budgetary skills and human resource management
• Experience in the delivery of regional programs
• Experience with hybrid and online courses, and meaningful use of technology
• Demonstrated ability in the development of new programs
• Demonstrated skill in team building and working with diverse constituencies
• Experience with state and national accreditation procedures in higher education
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, other administrators and community/school partners
• Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work with faculty to inspire, develop, articulate and implement a strategic vision
The hiring range for this position is dependent upon qualifications and departmental equity.
