The University of Alabama Libraries is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Special Collections Outreach Services Coordinator. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Special Collections the incumbent is responsible for developing and providing services to the scholarly community, K-12, and the general public which expand users’ awareness of and use of materials housed in the Division of Special Collections. The incumbent will develop strategies for making special collections resources available in classrooms on and off campus using both analog and digital surrogates; mount exhibits; coordinate lecture, book signings, and other public programs to highlight the collections and services of the Division. It is expected that the incumbent will be an effective team member in setting and carrying out the goals and mission of the Division of Special Collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Alabama Libraries is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Special Collections Outreach Services Coordinator. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Special Collections the incumbent is responsible for developing and providing services to the scholarly community, K-12, and the general public which expand users’ awareness of and use of materials housed in the Division of Special Collections. The incumbent will develop strategies for making special collections resources available in classrooms on and off campus using both analog and digital surrogates; mount exhibits; coordinate lecture, book signings, and other public programs to highlight the collections and services of the Division. It is expected that the incumbent will be an effective team member in setting and carrying out the goals and mission of the Division of Special Collections.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in American history, American literature, or related field of study; two or more years experience in a special collections environment; demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with diverse constituencies; effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent; experience with reference and bibliographic instruction; demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the delivery of a campus-wide bibliographic instruction program; strong knowledge of print and electronic information resources; strong knowledge of Southern history and/or literature; potential to achieve the requirements for tenure and promotion in the areas of librarianship, research and service; excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

ENVIRONMENT: The Division of Special Collections includes the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, the University of Alabama Archives, and the A.S. Williams, III Americana Collections. Exceptionally rich in all periods and aspects of Southern history and culture, the collections include letters, diaries, and business and professional papers of both major national figures and less commonly known individuals, book arts and print culture collections, the iconography of the South (ca. 1852 to the late twentieth century) in various formats and media, oral histories, Civil Rights, and popular culture collections. The University Libraries maintains membership in the Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, The Center for Research Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, SOLINET, and the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries. The Libraries use Ex Libris’ Voyager Integrated Library System. The Libraries’ homepage may be accessed at http://www.lib.ua.edu.
