It is an exciting time to be a part of The Ohio State University, a time of growth, change, and transformation from excellence to eminence. A key component of this transformation is our Extended and Distance Education programming. Already one of the nation’s largest land-grant universities, Ohio State has an immense presence throughout all of Ohio, and the nation. Taking that presence and translating it into a more vibrant, palpable learning experience is at the core of our Extended and Distance Education initiatives. This position is responsible for creating and implementing a cohesive and effective Extended and Distance Education program at the university, capitalizing on an existing and reorganized Continuing Education program. This is an opportunity to build upon that foundation, which makes this is the ideal role for a visionary looking to make a significant impact on the intellectual landscape of not just Ohio, but the world.
This individual will have a leading role in supporting college efforts for providing rigorous online program and course delivery, as well as overseeing the different operations in Extended Education. This position will be working to bring the educational resources of The Ohio State University to underserved segments of the global learning population, such as nontraditional students, military members and families, place-bound students, international students, and other non-traditional students that can bring critical change to the university and all of its students, faculty and staff.

Specifically, this position will:

1.Evaluate the existing and planned Distance Education program, play a key role in refining the strategic directions and then take responsibility for implementing the plan.
2.Embrace and overcome the challenges of expanding a line of program and course offerings offered at a distance, including fundamental challenges such as coordination with colleges, state and federal mandates, educational attainment, course alignment, educational affordability and issues of dual enrollment.
3.Work across boundaries with the colleges to develop and deliver courses that effectively fit into the Extended and Distance Education program vision.
4.Develop a strong working culture that reinforces the core values of The Ohio State University, with a focus on the quality and brand that OSU represents.
5.Build a positive working relationship with the individual colleges and Academic Affairs; define and refine communications surrounding Extended and Distance Education.
6.Create and implement a marketing plan for the new offerings provided through Extended and Distance Education.


Requirements: The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including:
1.Visionary – sees the big picture, imagines possibilities, and translates that vision into concrete deliverables.
2.Academic – understands relevant university programs and their demands, and works well with faculty and university administrators. Previous experience in a large, tier one research university is ideal.
3.Proven track record – implements and delivers programs that push the envelope in the Extended and Distance Education communities and that meet the needs of the various constituents.
4.Technology savvy – understands the synergy between technology and instructional design requirements in the context of program design, and the existing and emerging global directions of higher education that can be accommodated with new technology integration.
5.Strategic planner – strong business leader, with significant large-scale budgeting experience and considerable experience in fiscal management.
6.Collaborative – reinforces the strategic goals of the colleges to achieve a win-win while navigating the demands/competing priorities of multiple constituencies.
7.Leader – demonstrates the ability to provide effective supervision, and to mentor and foster professional development of staff, within a healthy and supportive working environment.
