The Academic Standards Counselor advises students experiencing academic difficulty regarding college policies, procedures and options to return to good standing. This person advises students on warning, probation, continued probation, and suspension status. Emphasis is placed on helping the student find academic success and encouraging retention. Duties include explaining policies, making referrals, maintaining records, interpreting career /interest and personality assessments, dealing with a variety of academic standards issues, coordinating with faculty and staff and other departments on campus. In addition, this position includes preparing statistical reports as needed. You will also be required to represent the department on various projects, committees, and meetings as assigned by the director.
Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
-Maintain a case load of continued probation students and manage necessary records with relevant and accurate information related to their academic standing.
-Evaluate student concerns and counsel students who have exceptional circumstances or hardships while requiring adherence to academic standards policy and procedure. Develops and implements strategies for students' unique situations.
-Assist students in the process of problem solving and evaluating student concerns. Provide resources and utilization of those resources (campus or community) to address concerns.
-Utilize career assessments, personality assessments, and interest assessments in order to assist students with self-awareness in an attempt to improve motivation.
-Represent the department in multiple functions including but not limited to: classroom and community presentations, membership in Advisor Forum and various campus-wide committees, marketing and promotional activities, training seminars, conferences, and workshops as assigned.
-Provide referrals to appropriate campus resources in response to informational requests from community members, UVU employees, and current and potential students, as necessary.
-Utilize various forms of technology including telephone, email, facsimile, presentation and database technologies to monitor, maintain, and provide accurate information to departmental clientele, campus personnel, and community members as necessary.
-Develop and manage Academic Standards Office academic standing database using Microsoft, Excel and Access.
-Prepares semester/term and annual academic standing data reports and analyses.
-Manage website and keep content updated and current.
-Manage academic standing and hold changes based on completion of workshops, mid-semester grade reports, grade changes and standing changes. Coordinates notification to students of changes in standing or hold status.
-Facilitates workshops to support students on probation, continued probation, and suspension.
-Provide support for all other projects as directed by the Academic Standards Director
