Detailed Job Description

The Director of the Pre-Medical Studies Program will lead the university-wide efforts in advising Quinnipiac University undergraduates and alumni on "pre-health" pathways for admission to medical, dental, veterinary and related health professional schools. The primary duty will be academic advising, however, student recruitment and strategic leadership of the program are essential responsibilities of this position.

Job Duties

Responsibilities Include:

Pre-Application Support: Lead students and alumni through the process of deciding on medicine as a future profession; explain the course requirements for admission to health professional school; guide students toward valuable resources to ensure academic success; and assist students with securing clinical and research experiences.

Applicant Support: Lead a faculty-based Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) in an annual review of approximately 50-60 applicants to professional schools to include collecting and summarizing student records and references, leading student interviews, working with the committee to author final university letter of support.

Strategic Leadership: Advocate for the Pre-Medical Studies Program to the University, to the Frank Netter School of Medicine (QU), to medical school admissions personnel; regularly participate in National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NEAAHP) conferences; attend conferences/open houses of medical schools.

Serve as advisor to the student Pre-Health Professions Organization and be a catalyst to encourage community service and leadership activities.

Establish and implement a program to increase QU student performance on pre-admission exams.

Work with faculty to create a Post-Baccalaureate program to enhance admission rates of our students, which entails extending QU student retention to a 5th year, recruiting new students, and increasing professional school admission rate.

Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Health Career Pathways to recruit high-quality students to QU for concentration in Pre-Medical Studies.

Create and host information/social sessions multiple times per year, both for recruitment of new students and to create a more cohesive, well-informed cohort of current pre-medical/health students.

Collect and maintain records that reflect admission success rates of QU students.

Teach one course per semester in the pre-med curriculum or in the QU Seminar Series.

Required Minimum Qualifications

M.S. or other advanced degree in the Basic/Health Sciences.

Prior knowledge of and experience with Pre-Medical advising and programming.

Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication, including public presentations.

Demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills and strong attention to detail.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in a Basic/Health Sciences discipline.
