Detailed Job Description

Mission College is seeking a talented leader to fill the position of Educational Dean of Instruction, Liberal Studies, Language Arts, Library & Academic Tutoring Center. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, our staff and faculty are among the most qualified in the state and our students appreciate the college for its friendly staff and supportive atmosphere.

Under direction of the appropriate Vice President, assist in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the district and college instructional programs and support services as assigned. Assure compliance with a variety of applicable laws, rules, regulations and requirements related to community college instruction by working closely with division and department chairs, in the fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities. Provide training, supervision and evaluation of the performance of assigned personnel as well as administering the district’s policies and procedures in relation to all bargaining unit agreements.

100% of full time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year, with anticipated start date of May 20, 2015. Schedule may change to include some evening or weekend hours, as needed. This position is an Educational Administrator and part of the Administrative employee unit.

Work Location: Mission College, Santa Clara, CA.

We have begun a district-wide classification study of all regular, non-faculty staff positions. A classification study is a process of studying, analyzing, and describing the nature and level of work performed by employees. This classification study will ultimately produce uniform job descriptions for every employee.

The classification study will also include a compensation study that will provide information on what other employers pay employees who are performing similar duties. The District will use this information to ensure that our employees are adequately compensated.

The classification study started in November 2014 and is expected to take approximately 9-12 months to complete. As a result of this study, it is possible for the job description and/or compensation to change in this position opening.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree; AND
  • One year of formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment; AND
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in providing leadership, oversight and administrative support for programs and services within Liberal Studies and Language Arts divisions.
  • Experience in providing leadership, oversight and administrative support as supervisor of the library.
  • Experience in providing leadership, oversight and administrative support for an academic skills/tutoring center program.

  • Provide leadership, oversight and administrative for assigned programs and services within the Instructional Divisions, as assigned.
  • Provide strategic leadership, and technical assistance to assign instructional and student support departments to improve and develop career, transfer and non-credit curricula and opportunities according to student need; work collaboratively with other administrators in the development of transfer, workforce and noncredit initiatives.
  • Assist direct reports and the Vice President in the resolution of student, faculty, and public concerns related to assigned areas; ensure that the appropriate Vice President is informed of these concerns in a timely manner.
  • Serve as the support administrator for grants college-wide and/or state initiatives; facilitate planning, implementation and evaluation of new college initiatives; ensure that grants and initiatives are implemented according to approved plans and reporting requirements are met in a timely manner; supervise grant managers and related personnel in assigned areas for effective implementation of grants, appropriate expenditure of funds.
  • Work collaboratively with district and college administration to ensure that faculty and staff within assigned areas are informed and trained in emergency preparedness and procedures for their assigned area. Participate in campus supervision and emergency planning; be familiar with the campus emergency plan and procedures.
  • Engage and work cooperatively with assigned personnel in program development pertinent to assigned areas and learning resources. Ensure that local community, student needs and faculty interest alignment with the college’s master plan in establishing the program’s priorities and goals.
  • Lead and maintain state-of-the-art practices, keeping abreast of current trends in the field of integrated instructional practices among disciplines. Assist faculty and staff in designing in designing and implementing annual training opportunities through staff development.
  • Work closely with the Curriculum committee to assure compliance with curriculum development and approval requirements.
  • Manage and supervise assigned Instructional Support Labs within assigned areas and collaborate with the other Educational Deans to optimize student learning, operational efficiency and compliance with college policies and state regulations.
  • Ensure that Divisions and Departments within assigned areas of responsibility meet requirements for all college planning and evaluation activities, including but not limited to program review, accreditation resource accounting and student learning outcomes and assessment.
  • Prepare and administer annual budgets for assigned area; review and approve expenditures according to established District policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Preparation of state and federal grant applications.
  • Work closely with the Curriculum Committee to assure compliance with curriculum development and approval requirements.
  • Recommend and implement techniques to improve policies and practices in order to take optimum advantage of opportunities and increase efficiencies; maintain current knowledge of state-of-the-art practices and methodologies in assigned functional areas.
  • Assure compliance with a variety of applicable laws, rules, regulations and requirements related to community college instruction; analyze, interpret and apply established laws and regulations and District policies in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare and administer annual budgets for assigned area; review and approve expenditures according to established District policies and procedures.
  • Participate in preparation of state and federal grant applications.

Salary and Benefits

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $9,296–$9,849 monthly (Administrative Salary Schedule, Range 16, Steps A-C).
  • Additional compensation: $1,500 for doctorate added to base salary annually, to be prorated on a monthly basis.
