Detailed Job Description

Under the direction of the Behavior Science Department, the Academic Advisor - Behavioral Science will: advise new, prospective, and transfer students in all aspects of academic programs; provide developmental and career advising; help students develop an educational plan toward graduation; manage an advising caseload toward greater retention.
Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
-Maintain a case load of incoming and continuing undergraduate students; maintain advising records using computer applications relevant for file maintenance and organization of case load.
-Assist and facilitate students with career exploration and the development of meaningful educational plans and academic emphasis selection.
-Respond and provide accurate information to informational requests from potential students, staff, high school counselors and others interested in UVU in person, via telephone and email and on site at UVU.
-Provide information, assistance and referrals to student support services to assist advisees in managing their college experience.
Interpret and explain UVU policies and procedures to advisees.
Assist students with the enrollment and registration process.Review post-secondary institution unofficial transcripts and prior academic history. Interpret test scores; assist with appropriate course placement; counsel on academic difficulty, remove holds etc.
-Serve as a member of the Advisement Forum; advocate and problem solve with faculty, administration and staff on student academic problems, issues and concerns; provide accurate information concerning program changes, assessment guidelines, course and instructor information, transfer issues, scholarships and appropriate referrals by attending and participating in necessary meetings, activities, and events of the forum.
-Represent the department on any relevant University committees, departmental committees, or professional associations/organizations as needed and/or assigned.
-Organize, coordinate or assist in managing a number of undergraduate student programs or advisement related events. Examples of such events include: Majors; Fair, Parent Orientation, International Student and Parent Orientation, Career Fairs, undergraduate information sessions, regional, national, and international guidance counselor events.
-Work with Advisor Training and Development staff to learn all aspects of UVU academic advising and achieve advisor certification.
-Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelors degree and two years experience related to the summary of duties, with displayed experience or emphasis within the appropriate department discipline.
Preferred:
Discipline-specific educational background or experience.
Advising experience within a higher education setting.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Knowledge of student development theory and its application to promote student retention and academic success in a college/university setting
-Knowledge of student advising techniques pertaining to content, curriculum, curriculum development, course scheduling and graduation requirements specific to the academic major, department, discipline, or college
-Knowledge of graduate schools, careers, or job markets and/or related research tools relative to the academic major, department, discipline, or college
-Skill in assisting students to develop effective academic plans in pursuit of career and life goals
-Skill in the use of media and technology, including but not limited to office software platforms and student data systems (i.e. BANNER) as applied to management of records, report preparation and related activities
Ability to creatively and independently problem solve by prioritizing and multitasking under pressure
-Ability to serve individuals with diverse personalities through the use of effective interpersonal and communication skills
-Ability to work with a campus-wide community in a professional team environment
-Ability to interpret UVU's core values (serious, inclusive, engaged) as they apply to advising
