Detailed Job Description

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a Resident Lecturer position. This position is a three-year annually renewable contract with the possibility of reappointment for additional three year assignments contingent upon satisfactory job performance and the availability of funding. The position includes a teaching load of 15 credit hours a semester, departmental and university service assignments, and coordination/administrative responsibilities. A teaching load of 9-10 credit hours for summer may be available with additional compensation. There is also a possibility of reassigned time for some administrative responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.


Three (3) or more years teaching experience in a university IEP setting.
A knowledge of grammar, reading, writing, and listening/speaking teaching strategies and methods, and the ability to give clear grammar explanations.
A teaching philosophy that is appropriate to the higher education setting and the teaching of ESL students from basic to advanced level.
Proficiency in a second language. Experience teaching/living abroad and/or foreign language teaching experience. Record of on-going professional development.
Professional conference presentation experience.
Experience developing ESL course/curriculum and outcomes materials.


Excellence in teaching a variety of ESL courses, levels and skills.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Native English speaker or near-native fluency in English Cross-cultural sensitivity.
Strong classroom management skills, organizational and planning skills, creativity, and the ability to give clear concise directions and explanations.
Evidence of effective teaching in various learning environments (e.g. face-to-face, technology-mediated classrooms, hybrid, online).
Expertise in issues affecting adult ESL students in the higher education setting (outcomes and assessment, CBI, project based learning, curriculum design and alternative delivery methods).


The ability/willingness to teach all levels (beginner – advanced).
The ability/willingness to teach all course periods (8:00am – 9:30pm).
The ability to work within and meet program administrative deadlines The ability to work well with diverse colleagues.
The ability to integrate second language acquisition trends and basic skills to prepare students for further education, workforce and community involvement.
