Job Summary

This class is the first of four levels in the Instructional Support series.  Incumbents provide tutoring services to students in one or more academic areas.  Responsibilities may include tutoring individuals or small groups of students; monitoring and scheduling student tutors; administering tests; compiling instructional materials to be used in the tutoring process; delivering developed content; and maintaining records of student progress.

Educational Requirements*

Associate's degree.

Experience Requirements*

Two years related experience.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of those requirements listed above.

Licensing Requirements

Some positions may require licensing as a Registered Nurse.

Tutors students in small groups or one-on-one formats, which involves: assessing student needs in order to facilitate and maximize tutoring sessions; proofreading written work prepared by students; obtaining and utilizing appropriate course materials, such as the course syllabus; and performing related duties.

  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

At the forefront of providing out-of-class support, the Writing Studio at SPC's Clearwater campus is looking for a dynamic professional with a student-centered, proactive approach to tutoring. Therefore, this individual should be able to:
• Provide clear explanation and instruction of basic and advanced concepts in reading comprehension, English composition, and public speaking, as they apply to a wide variety of courses across the disciplines;
• Work well with students from diverse educational, cultural, and social backgrounds;
• Effect the attitude and skills to build and sustain strong partnerships with faculty;
• Demonstrate strong presentation and public speaking skills;
• Compile, design, and deliver instructional content in individual, group, and online settings;
• Assist the Associate Director of Learning Resources in scheduling staff, reporting data, and recruiting and training student assistants and volunteers;
• Exhibit the flexibility to manage multiple initiatives within a changing, fast-paced environment;
• Continue to learn new systems, processes, and instructional strategies while working in this position.

Some nights and weekends are required.
