Saint Louis University a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, healthcare, and service is seeking applicants for the next Chair of the Department of Aviation Science in Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology. This is a prestigious position for the leadership of a famous and historic department in a pioneering college, which is part of a nationally-prominent university.
Saint Louis University is the first university established west of the Mississippi in 1818. Parks College, founded in 1927, is the first College allowed by the US federal government to certify pilots (Air Agency Certificate No.1, July 15th 1929). The College has a worldwide reputation for excellence in forming aviation and engineering leaders and pioneers. The founder, Oliver L. Parks, donated the College to Saint Louis University in 1946. After a series of firsts in aviation, the College also awarded the first Ph.D. in Aviation in the world in 2013.
The College offers academic programs in engineering and aviation that integrate the education of the whole person, with classroom and hands-on experiences in study and research. The hallmarks of the student learning experience at the College include innovation and entrepreneurship, development of leadership qualities, and active engagement of undergraduates in research and service. The Department offers a B.S. degree program in Aeronautics with concentrations in Flight Science (Professional Pilot) and Aviation Management, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aviation. The College also offers B.S. degrees in Aerospace, Mechanical, Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Engineering. The current enrolment is about 800 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students.Parks College has made a long-term commitment to a research-inspired teaching profile while maintaining and enhancing our long-established excellence in education. These plans are well under way with several strategic additions of key senior and junior faculty, including a Dean who started in September 2012 and three engineering Department Chairs who started in July 2014. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and visionary leader in aviation, who is able to inspire excellence in students, faculty and staff, and has an established record of successful appointments in collegiate aviation. The candidate for the Chair of the Department of Aviation Science is expected to have the following attributes :
-experience with building enrollment in flight and other aviation-related fields
-an earned research doctorate, capable of being awarded tenure in the department on appointment
-demonstrated research record with ability to mentor junior faculty, and commitment to support the inter-disciplinary research activity in the College and the University
-ability to manage finances and delegate
-significant aviation-industry contacts
-proven leadership and communication skills, maintaining and developing alumni relations, ability to build international alliances, and demonstrated high level of energy and creativity
The Department has close collaborations with local and national industry and government establishments and is host of the FAA-funded Center for Aviation Safety Research. The next Chair of the Department of Aviation Science will be the department's academic leader responsible for all aspects of management, leadership, and advancement both within the department and with external constituencies. The Chair will be instrumental in the enhancement of existing programs and the further development of education and funded research. The Chair will work closely with the Dean of the College in achieving the strategic objectives set forth by the College and the University, and on the advancement of the department's professional/industrial, government, alumni and development relations.
